Obesity, smoking and diabetes driving global rise in early deaths

The number of people in poor health worldwide has climbed by almost 50% since the turn of the millennium, with many at risk of dying prematurely due to being overweight with high blood pressure and blood sugar. People face "increasing exposure to risk factors," including "low physical activity, and diet high in sugar-sweetened beverages," said Greg Roth of the Seattle-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). Roth and fellow researchers found a 49.4% increase in "lost years of healthy life due to poor health and early death," which they said were "attributable to metabolism-rel......

Chasing weight loss dream, many in U.S. seek Ozempic alternatives

Washington (AFP) - Like many Americans struggling to lose weight, Marissa Montanino felt compelled to try Ozempic or one of the other new so-called "wonder drugs" described as revolutionary in the fight against obesity. Those countries, the report explains, have dietary preferences which trend towards more highly-processed foods, in addition to increased levels of sedentary behavior, weaker policies on food supply and marketing. Healthcare ......

New pediatric guidelines for treating obese children include surgery and meds

The American Academy of Pediatrics published guidelines for treating the 14.4 million U.S. children and teens afflicted by obesity on Monday. The organization of 67,000 pediatricians recognized obesity as a “sensitive topic” that can be treated successfully by acknowledging it as a condition in which “complex” factors from genes to family income can play a factor. Recommendations for kids as young as 2 include behavior and lifestyle changes including physical activity. As heavily overweight children enter their teens, those treatments as well as medications may be in order, along with surgical......
How Fitbit drove me crazy

How Fitbit drove me crazy

For the last two years, I've forced myself to get up at an unpleasant hour at least three days a week to fit a morning run into my already hectic schedule. Surprisingly, I learned to love running. As soon as I hit my stride and feel the endorphins flowing, my mood evolves from testy to unbearably chipper. A sweat-filled run through the mean streets of Los Angeles is my favorite way to start the day.
