Birthmark, shorts on headless corpse washed up on NYC beach match missing Irish filmmaker

NEW YORK — A distinctive birthmark helped police link the headless, armless corpse that washed up on a Queens beach to missing Irish filmmaker Ross McDonnell, police said Tuesday. Police are still waiting for a DNA match, but they believe the remains belong to the 44-year-old Emmy-award winning visual artist, who was reported missing more than two weeks ago, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. “We matched a birth mark on the body that was discovered (to McDonnell),” Kenny said. “We also have photographs of him wearing the same swimsuit.” McDonnell was a fan of so-called “wild swimming”......

Headless body that washed up on Queens beach may be missing Irish filmmaker, police sources say

NEW YORK — A headless, armless body that washed up on a Rockaway beach Friday may be the remains of an Irish filmmaker, Ross McDonnell, reported missing more than two weeks ago, police sources said Saturday. The Emmy Award winner, who friends said loved the ocean and enjoyed “wild swimming,” or swimming outside in nature, disappeared on Nov. 4 after riding his bike to the Rockaways, a short distance from where the body washed ashore. Detectives believe the deceased is McDonnell, but were waiting for the results of a DNA comparison to be sure, a police source with knowledge of the case said. “W......

Biden announces new national monument near Nevada-California border

SAN JOSE, Calif. — President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced he will establish a new national monument across a vast landscape on southern Nevada’s border with California to protect an area sacred to 12 Native American tribes and rich with big horn sheep, Joshua tree forests, desert tortoises, ancient petroglyphs and other unique features. The 450,000-acre monument will be located on federally owned property overseen by Bureau of Land Management Land in Clark County, Nevada, including most of the point in Nevada’s southern shape. Covering an area 15 times the size of the city of San Francisco......

Rip tides, few lifeguards: Why drownings in the Great Lakes will likely remain high

DETROIT — Brandi Donley believes a lifeguard would have made all the difference for her 20-year-old son, Brandon Schmidt. Schmidt drowned nearly four years ago in Lake Michigan at Windsnest Park south of Grand Haven. There were almost no safety features, Donley recalls: no signs advising against swimming, no flotation devices to help someone struggling and no lifeguards to be seen. “A couple deputies and the sheriff responded, but no one was capable of getting in that water until the fire department got there because nobody was water-safety trained,” she said. Schmidt was one of at least 117 r......

Among Winter Olympic cities, Tahoe will soon be too warm to host Games

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Towering Squaw Peak has groomed generations of America’s most elite winter Olympians, from racer Tamara McKinney and freestylist Jonny Mosely to six members of this year’s Alpine Team USA. But Lake Tahoe’s snow will be too patchy and too wet to host future Winter Olympic Games, according to a new analysis, dashing hopes of repeating the 1960 honor that built the region into a powerhouse of winter sports. Because of climate change, the resort — formerly Squaw Valley but now named Palisades Tahoe — is no longer a dependable site for the Games, with the risk of scant and soggy ......

‘We’re left to pick up the pieces’: As search mission nears end, Surfside looks ahead

SURFSIDE, Fla. — Nearly a month after the Surfside Community Center was converted into an emergency operations hub in the aftermath of one of the worst building failures in U.S. history, the municipal building buzzed on Monday with the sound of children playing. Just weeks prior, the center was engulfed in sadness. Evacuated residents and distraught family members filled the oceanfront civic center after the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South six blocks away. Authorities performed on-site DNA testing to help identify victims. A local restaurateur and team of volunteers set up a foo......
