American Airlines passengers tackle, restrain man who tried to open emergency exit mid-flight

Passengers onboard an American Airlines flight reported feeling rushing wind when a fellow traveler attempted to rip open the emergency exit in mid-air on Tuesday. Six of them sprang into action, tackling the man and holding him down in the aisle until the plane safely returned to Sunport Airport in Albuquerque. Flight 1219 had been on its way to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport when the incident occurred roughly half an hour after takeoff. “30 minutes after departing Albuquerque I was shaken out of my Panda Express and tequila-induced stupor by a man trying to aggressively open the airp......

Boeing leaders address airplane quality crisis and hit to reputation

Last year ended better for Boeing than Wall Street had projected, yet when the earnings details were released Wednesday, the healthy cash flow didn't seem to matter much now. "Boeing's world changed on January 5th when the Alaska Airlines door blew off, and so anything before that date is now of less relevance," financial analyst Rob Stallard of Vertical Research wrote a note to investors. Boeing lost $2.2 billion in 2023, the fifth loss in five bad years, but the best result since 2019. A few weeks ago, that might have been taken as a sign that in 2024 Boeing might finally make it back into t......

Thousands of flights canceled as Arctic blast descends on the U.S.

An Arctic blast gripping much of the nation caused more than 11,000 flights to be delayed or canceled Monday, and with another storm looming, the number was expected to grow. New York was spared most of the delays at the outset, but that was poised to change as a snowstorm descended across the Northeast. As of Monday evening, there had been 8,478 delays within, into or out of the U.S. and 3,028 cancellations, according to Flight Aware. Worldwide, delays totaled 25,419 and there were 4,150 cancellations. Southwest Airlines led the pack in the U.S. with 761 cancellations, or 19% of its flights. ......

2 recent airline accidents show those preflight videos save lives when followed

If you’ve flown recently you’ve probably watched — wait, who am I kidding, failed to watch — an airline’s preflight safety video. And look, I get it. You didn’t watch because nothing ever happens. Until it does, as it did at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Jan. 2, when a Japan Airlines Airbus A350 struck a military aircraft upon landing, and five days later when a large piece of an Alaska Airlines 737 ripped away from the fuselage at 16,000 feet. The fact that all 379 passengers and crew safely escaped the burning JAL aircraft with just a few minor injuries, and that no one was sucked out of the 737......

Dominican Republic allows some Haiti flights as OAS arrives to meet about border dispute

After banning all air travel with neighboring Haiti in adiplomatic row over the construction of a canal on Haitian soil, authorities in the Dominican Republic have relaxed their stance. But Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader says a decision announced on Monday by his Civil Aviation Board to lift a Sept. 15 ban on flights between the two countries, which share the island of Hispaniola, only applies to some individuals in Haiti, principally Haitian diplomats and Haitian nationals with Dominican visas who already had flight reservations. “It is a fairly small group,” he said about as he s......

Florida doles out $50 million to contractor providing DeSantis Israel flights

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Emergency management officials have authorized up to nearly $50 million in taxpayer dollars to one contractor for open-ended charter flights since Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered the state to bring Floridians home from Israel two weeks ago, public records show. State officials have offered little information about who’s involved in helping Americans leave Israel amid the war with Hamas, besides identifying Project Dynamo, a Tampa-based nonprofit international rescue group founded by ex-military personnel helping to run the mission. So it’s unclear if all of the money is going to ......
