Migrant brawl with NYPD at Times Square shelter points to increasing anger, despair

NEW YORK — The brazen attack on New York City Police Department officers by a group of migrants outside a Times Square shelter prompted an immediate — and strong — backlash. The attack became a lightning rod for criticism over the already-polarizing migrant crisis in New York City, with calls for the migrants involved to be deported. But the midtown brawl was the latest in a series of violent episodes linked to migrants, many unfolding against a backdrop of increasing frustration and despair. There have been knife fights, stabbings, tussles after NYPD moped confiscations, struggles over coats ......

Authorities in Texas are investigating after they say more than 50 people have come forward in what they are calling a funeral scam. “This is a case that absolutely turns my stomach. It turns my stomach because you’re dealing with people at the most vulnerable times of their lives,” Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen said at a Jan. 26 news conference streamed by KPRC. Javian Major and Sandy Broussard have been charged with forgery, according a Facebook post from the constable’s office. “Allegedly, the duo conspired to forge beneficiaries’ signatures, illicitly obtaining life insuran......

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Six people were wounded inside Kansas City’s Crown Center in a shooting that drew a major police response and shut down the shopping mall on Wednesday evening. In addition to the 55-month sentence, Chrestman, 50, also must pay $2,000 restitution for damage to the Capitol, which the government says totaled more than $2.9 million. “I’m pretty ashamed of myself,” Chrestman said as he stood before Judge Timothy J. Kelly in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He read a statement apologizing to the court and to his ......

Melee over secret tunnel at Brooklyn Chabad headquarters ends in 12 arrests

NEW YORK — A dozen students at Brooklyn’s Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters were arrested as they tried to stop efforts to block a secret illegal tunnel they had dug in a bizarre attempt to expand the house of worship, officials said Tuesday. Police were called to the famed Orthodox headquarters on Eastern Parkway near Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights around 6 p.m. Monday when several Orthodox students began breaking through a cement sanctuary wall with hammers. Earlier in the day, Chabad administrators ordered the tunnel the students were trying to link to a basement study hall be sealed. S......

NYPD clears Brooklyn officer of using racial slur at vigil for man shot dead by police

NEW YORK — A Brooklyn housing cop was cleared of NYPD disciplinary charges that he used a racial slur when he stated at a vigil for a man fatally shot by police that he “would have shot” the man himself. A Police Department trial judge found Officer Jamarr Burnett not guilty of making the comment overheard by Motique Graves, whose brother Malik Tyquarn Graves, 33, died in a fusillade of police bullets when he allegedly pointed a gun at a group of officers on June 2, 2020. The judge in the case said that while there was evidence the comment was made, there was no clear evidence Burnett made it.......
