Man who fatally slashed his ex-wife gets decades-long prison sentence

A man was sentenced last week to 40 years in state prison after he was convicted of killing his ex-wife in Camden County in 2020, authorities announced Wednesday. Philip Puche, 76, of Cherry Hill, was convicted on April 3 of murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose before his sentencing on May 15, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said in a release. Puche attacked 63-year-old Nancy Kenney on July 19, 2020, just as she was entering her car outside of her home on Road C in Audubon Park, the office said. Haddon Townsh......

Northern Lights may glow again as intense solar storm continues

Stargazers in New Jersey — and many states across the nation — who woke up early Saturday morning were treated to a dazzling sky show as a powerful solar storm caused the colorful Northern Lights to glow in places that rarely see them. From Metuchen in Middlesex County to Bedminster in Somerset County and towns up in Bergen County, scores of skywatchers took to social media to post photos they snapped of this rare event. In case you slept late and missed it, there is some good news: The Space Weather Prediction Center says the Northern Lights may be visible in many areas of the United States a......

N.J. sheriff’s deputy has endured years of sexual harassment on job, lawsuit notice says

A Passaic County sheriff’s deputy who works at the county jail has filed a notice that she intends to sue the department over accusations she has endured years of sexual harassment and recently had a promotion rescinded. Nicole Staso, 41, states in a notice of tort claim, which precedes the filing of lawsuit, that she was promoted to detective in the department’s Community Release Center, but it was taken away two hours later based on false accusations about her conduct and personal life. Staso’s legal notice filed April 25 claims she’s endured years of sexual harassment within the Passaic Cou......

Girl sexually assaulted 20+ times in New Jersey elementary school bathroom, lawsuit says

The mother of an elementary school student filed a lawsuit last week against Verona Public Schools alleging her daughter was sexually assaulted by another student more than 20 times while in first and second grades. The assaults allegedly occurred from October 2021 through January 2023 in a student bathroom at F.N. Brown Elementary School, according to the suit filed April 22 in Superior Court of Essex County. The victim was 6 and 7 years old when her male classmate would enter the bathroom and crawl under her stall to molest her, the suit says. “Your mom isn’t going to be able to help you,” t......

This house sold for $120K over asking price despite the ‘slow’ real estate season

The idea that houses don’t sell in the dead of winter was proven wrong when a home in West Orange not only sold quickly, but for $120,000 more than its asking price. The four bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom extended split level was listed Jan. 13 for $600,000. It was under contract by Feb. 2 for $720,000. “I wasn’t trying to underprice it,” said Andrew Allen of Compass in Morristown. “I was trying to create urgency.” Comparable home sales in the area were $635,000 to “maybe $650,000, pushing it,” he said. Before the house was listed, Allen had the homeowners paint a red dining room and a bl......

Two sources of Tammy Murphy's U.S. Senate campaign cash: State contractors and lobbyists

In her U.S. Senate bid, First Lady Tammy Murphy has tapped a pot of campaign cash from contractors and lobbyists who do business with the state government led by Gov. Phil Murphy, an NJ Advance Media analysis has found. Though a newcomer as a candidate, Tammy Murphy is an experienced fundraiser from the six years her husband has spent as the state’s chief executive. That prowess has continued with her own race, and she reported raising $3.2 million by the end of 2023 despite throwing her hat into the ring only weeks before. Of her war chest, more than $235,000 came from contractors and lobbyis......
