More than 100 people got sick on a world cruise that just left Fort Lauderdale, CDC says

MIAMI — More than 100 people have fallen ill with stomach problems on a monthslong world cruise that recently stopped in Fort Lauderdale. At least 123 passengers and 16 staff members have reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness, including diarrhea and vomiting, while on board the Queen Victoria ship, operated by Cunard Cruise Line, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The UK cruise line has been owned since 1998 by Doral-based Carnival Corp. The cruise, which initially departed from Southampton, England, in early January, is on a 107-night sailing journey. ‘Emergency’ or not, Covid is still killing people

‘Emergency’ or not, Covid is still killing people

With around 20,000 people dying of covid in the United States since the start of October, and tens of thousands more abroad, the covid pandemic clearly isn’t over. However, the crisis response is, since the World Health Organization and the Biden administration ended their declared health emergencies last year. Let’s not confuse the terms “pandemic” and “emergency.” As Abraar Karan, an infectious disease physician and researcher at Stanford University, said, “The pandemic is over until you are scrunched in bed, feeling terrible.” Pandemics are defined by neither time nor severity, but rather b......
What would a second Trump presidency look like for health care?

What would a second Trump presidency look like for health care?

On the presidential campaign trail, former President Donald Trump is, once again, promising to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act — a nebulous goal that became one of his administration’s splashiest policy failures. “We’re going to fight for much better health care than Obamacare. Obamacare is a catastrophe,” Trump said at a campaign stop in Iowa on Jan. 6. The perplexing revival of one of Trump’s most politically damaging crusades comes at a time when the Obama-era health law is even more popular and widely used than it was in 2017, when Trump and congressional Republicans proved unab......

‘Preventable deaths’: Kansas City mayor tackles drug crisis with first-ever ‘Fentanyl Summit’

Mayor Quinton Lucas held a “Fentanyl Summit” Friday afternoon at the Kansas City Health Department to raise awareness on the city’s fentanyl and opioid crisis. Health officials, law enforcement and families had a public discussion to tackle the epidemic of opioid and fentanyl related-deaths. During a press conference after the event, the mayor categorized the issue of drug overdoses in the city as an “epidemic” driven by fentanyl. Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported there were 109,698 overdose deaths in 2022. As previously reported by The Star, Kansas Cit......

Obama Presidential Center museum director aims for history, context

CHICAGO -- The tower of the Obama Presidential Center is getting a lot of attention as it rises in Jackson Park on the South Side. Meanwhile, Louise Bernard is trying to build the centerpiece museum’s interior: balancing former President Barack Obama’s philosophy and his namesake foundation’s mission with historical accuracy in a time of corrosive partisanship. While plans for the center’s outer shell have been known (and litigated over) for years, its insides — and the narrative Obama’s team plans to present over four floors of distinct exhibits — have largely been unknown. The woman leading ......

New York governor signs bill to establish statewide doula registry as infant mortality rate rises

NEW YORK — Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday signed legislation to establish a statewide doula directory, aiming to improve New Yorkers’ access to childbirth experts and to combat a recent nationwide rise in infant mortality. The bill requires the state Health Department to create and maintain a doula database, promoting the use of doulas. Hochul also outlined more than $4 million in state funding for regional health care centers focused on the periods before and after birth. Doulas are trained to provide crucial counseling during the process of childbirth, but do not deliver babies. Mothers who have......
