Busted: 62 members of Congress caught breaking the law

At least 62 members of 118th Congress have violated a federal insider trading and conflicts-of-interest law, a Raw Story analysis of congressional financial disclosures reveals.

Most of these violations involve failures to properly disclose stock trades as required by the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act of 2012. Some involve not abiding by the transparency and personal financial disclosure requirements first outlined in the STOCK Act's post-Watergate predecessor, the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.

Marjorie Taylor Greene buys condo in 'crime ridden hell hole'

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) purchased a new home in Washington, D.C., even after publicly bashing the nation's capital, according to a congressional financial disclosure.

Greene called Washington, D.C., a “crime ridden hell hole” and an “embarrassment” in a November 2022 tweet.

Fast forward to today, and Greene now owns a condo within the District of Columbia, valued between $500,001 and $1 million, according to her 2023 annual financial report filed on May 15 and recently made public....

Marjorie Taylor Greene is buying stocks again. Some picks pose a conflict of interest

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is back playing the stock market after an extended absence — and she just purchased stock in two companies whose business dealings potentially conflict with her congressional committee assignments.

In a public filing released today and reviewed by Raw Story, Greene reported buying up to $15,000 Qualcomm, a federal defense contractor. Greene serves on the Homeland Security Committee and the Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement.

Enviro congressman’s wife buys — then dumps — dozens of oil, energy and other stocks

Enviro congressman’s wife buys — then dumps — dozens of oil, energy and other stocks

An environmentalist Democratic congressman acknowledged that his wife purchased — then quickly dumped — nearly 100 stocks in various oil, energy, tobacco, defense and other companies, blaming a new investment firm for going on an erroneous stock shopping spree.

Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ) reported that Nicole Stanton’s 94 stock purchases included shares in fossil fuel giants Chevron, ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips; power utility NextEra Energy; tobacco company Philip Morris International; transportation companies Union Pacific and Tesla and communications technology company and defense contractor Qualcomm, to name a few.

Stanton explained the apparent snafu in a Nov. 9 disclosure to Congress: “In Sept. 2023, my wife started with a new investment firm for her assets, and this investment firm was unaware of our policy against owning individual stocks. On Sept. 26, the new investment firm purchased stock mimicking the S&P 500. I learned of the purchase of stock on Oct. 21, and immediately on the next business day (Oct. 23) requested the stocks be divested. The new investment firm sold the stock and instead invested in Exchange Traded Funds.”...

Revealed: The massive caveat in Trump’s newly certified personal financial disclosure

Revealed: The massive caveat in Trump’s newly certified personal financial disclosure

More than two months after filing a federally required financial report, former President Donald Trump got approval Tuesday from the U.S. Office of Government Ethics — with a notable caveat.

“OGE notes that several of the assets on this report are the subject of dispute in the case of New York v. Donald Trump, et al.,” said an unusual notation on Trump’s public financial disclosure report, which was certified Tuesday by Shelley K. Finlayson, acting director, chief of staff and program counsel for the Office of Government Ethics.

“However, the time period at issue in that case does not appear to overlap with the reporting period of this report. OGE does not independently verify the value of the reported assets. In certifying this report, OGE relied on the valuation of assets reported by the filer,” the Office of Government Ethics’ notation reads....

Republican senator with military oversight buys stock in top defense contractor

Another member of a congressional armed services committee has personally invested in the stock of a major U.S. defense contractor that received more than $1.7 billion in government contracts — just last month.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) purchased between $15,001 and $50,000 in stock in Raytheon on Sept. 13, according to new congressional personal financial disclosure filings. Raytheon was awarded more than $1.7 billion in contracts in September, according to a Raw Story analysis of contract announcements from the Department of Defense.

Mullin serves on the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services, which has jurisdiction over areas such as “aeronautical and space activities peculiar to or primarily associated with the development of weapons systems or military operations; common defense; Department of Defense, the Department of the Army, the Department of the Navy, and the Department of the Air Force,” according to its website....
