Washington woman with tuberculosis wanted by police for refusing treatment, failure to isolate

Authorities in Washington State are set to arrest a woman who has been avoiding tuberculosis treatment and isolation for more than a year. Judge Philip Sorensen on Thursdaysigned an arrest warrant permitting authorities to detain the 42-year-old woman, identified in court documents only as V.N. Once arrested, she will be taken to a specially designated facility at the Pierce County Jail for isolation, testing and treatment, KOMO reported. Sorensen issued the order “as a last resort,” he said, after health officials appealed to him for a 16th time last month to get the woman to voluntarily isol......

The relationship started on an online dating site. Katsumi Iwasaki was enthralled by a person who claimed to be a US soldier stationed in Damascus, Syria. They quickly fell to emailing “sweet things,” Iwasaki said. The 81-year-old San Francisco man had been living alone after his partner of 22 years died of lung cancer, and the budding relationship “made me feel like I had a bright future.” After a few months of corresponding in late 2016, the person, who said his name was “James Lopez,” mentioned the gold — $1 million worth. CHICAGO — One morning in March2021, at a nursing home in Evanston, resident Velta Saint registered an alarmingly low 44% oxygen level in her blood. Normal levels range from 95% to 100%, and one study recommends hospitalization for any patient with a reading below 90%. Medical workers tried to improve Saint’s respiration, then sent her to a hospital — which sent her back to the nursing home, before she was returned to the hospital, where she died. Saint’s ordeal came after her daughter, a registered nurse, said the home had been slow, in her opinion, to diagnose her condition and failed to trea......

How California's toxic wildfire smoke affects health. What the experts are saying

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The West is burning and residents are already feeling the impacts on their health. As plumes of smoke and poor air quality blanket California, residents may experience tightening in their chests, eye irritation, runny noses, sore throats, coughing attacks. The Air Quality Index, a method of air quality reporting and forecasting, rose as high as 226 in Sacramento this week. While the AQI was higher in 2018 from the Camp Fire, Sacramento County's current bad air quality still poses serious health threats. "It is concerning because we are exposed to higher pollutant concentra......
