'Terrible experience’: Iraq vet U.S. citizen nabbed by ICE shares ordeal in stark new ad

George Retes, a 26-year-old U.S. citizen and Army veteran, isn’t staying quiet — five months after he says he was assaulted and detained by immigration agents on his commute to work as a security contractor outside Los Angeles.

“Your voice matters,” Retes told Raw Story. “Calling your representatives, calling your people in charge, letting your voice be heard: it matters.”

Retes is the face of a new $250,000 ad campaign from Home of the Brave, a nonprofit focused on portraying what it calls the “catastrophic harm” of President Donald Trump’s second administration....

'Drunk with power': Author tells how Chief Justice John Roberts 'corrupted' Supreme Court

Twenty years ago this week, John Roberts was sworn in as chief justice of the Supreme Court, at 50 years old.

On that day, Lisa Graves “wept.” As chief counsel for nominations with the Senate Judiciary Committee from 2002 to 2005, she anticipated Roberts’ commitment to “advancing a right-wing political agenda through the judiciary,” she writes in her new book: "Without Precedent: How Chief Justice Roberts and His Accomplices Rewrote the Constitution and Dismantled Our Rights."

With President George W. Bush having two Supreme Court vacancies to fill, Roberts was considered a “bankable vote for the Right’s political agenda” and was supported by the Federalist Society’s Leonard Leo, the activist and fundraising impresario now widely considered the architect of the Court’s 6-3 conservative majority, Graves said....

Can we rid artificial intelligence of bias?

Can we rid artificial intelligence of bias?

San Francisco (AFP) - Artificial intelligence built on mountains of potentially biased information has created a real risk of automating discrimination, but is there any way to re-educate the machines? The question for some is extremely urgent. In this ChatGPT era, AI will generate more and more decisions for health care providers, bank lenders or lawyers, using whatever was scoured from the internet as source material.  AI's underlying intelligence, therefore, is only as good as the world it came from, as likely to be filled with wit, wisdom, and usefulness, as well as hatred, prejudice and r......

Navalny team organizing public memorial service before Kremlin's eyes

The team of the late Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, who was President Vladimir Putin's fiercest domestic opponent, said it plans to organize a public memorial service in Moscow by Friday. "We are looking for a hall for Alexei's public farewell," Navalny's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh wrote on Monday on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The planned date is the end of the current working week, she added. Navalny died suddenly on February 16 in the prison camp with the unofficial name "Polar Wolf" in the Siberian Arctic region of Yamal, Russian authorities said. The circumstances of h......

Navalny's mother: He was recently 'alive, healthy and full of life'

The mother of jailed Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny has commented on the reports of her son's death in a Russian prison camp. "I don't want to hear any expressions of sympathy," she was quoted as saying on Friday by independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta. She last saw her son during a visit to the prison camp last Monday, she added. "He was alive, healthy and full of life." Supporters of Navalny said earlier they have not yet received direct confirmation of his death and have only seen a general announcement issued by the prison system....

UN experts urge Mexico to stamp out extortion of migrants

Mexico City (AFP) - United Nations experts on Friday called on Mexico to crack down on extortion by police and other officials targeting vulnerable migrants in flagrant violation of their human rights. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention also urged the Mexican government to avoid a repeat of the tragedy last year when 40 migrants died in a fire while behind bars. More than 240,000 undocumented migrants and asylum seekers were detained in Mexico in the first half of 2023, including many children, the experts said at the conclusion of a 12-day visit. According to the Mexican constitution......
