A$$hole America

[rebelmouse-image 24749421 original_size="325x466" expand=1]The war between Roger Ebert and teabagger racist twits has been another interesting lesson for the world, re: the fact that many, many people are "conservative" because they're assholes and the ideology is a perfect fit for them. But what's interesting to me is the event that touched it all off was another example of people being assholes just because they love being assholes---a bunch of kids got in trouble for wearing American flags on Cinco de Mayo, which was basically a fuck-you to Hispanic students on a day set aside, like St. Patrick's Day, to celebrate a group's unique cultural spot within a larger country that was built, remember, by immigrants.

M. LeBlanc linked kind of baffling but thoroughly interesting screed that Roger Ebert wrote about youthful sexuality.* The point he's stabbing at seems a little obscure---he's annoyed at hypocrisy, thinks sex is great for young people to get into, wishes that he hadn't grown up with prudish prejudices, and wants kids to know making out isn't just a means to an end, but it's all sort of a muddle of points---but the story he tells in it is amazing.

What's interesting to me is that Ben Stein did not actually want Roger Ebert to review "Expelled". He wanted Ebert not to review "Expelled", so that he could complain that Ebert is shunning the film, and continue to play the victim of a conspiracy to shut out the movie from being viewed. Ebert was only selected because he's famous enough that the ignorami that make up the Christian right would understand the situation.
