Samuel Alito's big hint about future plans raises stakes of Senate midterm fight

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has confirmed he's weighing retirement, opening the door to a possible exit after next year's term that would hand President Trump a fourth opportunity to reshape the bench.

In excerpts from a CBS News interview set to air Monday, the 76-year-old justice said he considered stepping down this year and plans to revisit the decision again in 2027, Politico flagged on Friday.

"It's something that I think that somebody at my age has to think about every term," Alito said. "But I thought that I could still make a valuable contribution, which is why I became a justice and a judge in the first place."...

Rattled WSJ board demands to know 'what changed' after Justice Alito's surprise recusal

The conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board is demanding answers after Justice Samuel Alito abruptly stepped aside from a blockbuster Supreme Court climate case.

The Journal's editorial board addressed the recusal in an opinion piece on Tuesday. It warned that Alito's absence from Suncor Energy v. Boulder County opens the door to a 4-4 deadlock when the justices hear arguments Monday.

"That's regrettable," the board wrote....

Alito throws Amy Coney Barrett's own line back at her as right-wing justices clash

Conservative justices Samuel Alito and Amy Coney Barrett clashed on Monday in a Supreme Court ruling involving mail-in voting, which was considered a rejection of the Republican Party's attack on mail-in ballots.

Coney Barrett wrote the opinion in the 5-4 ruling in Watson v. Republican National Committee that upheld a Mississippi law that allows mail-in ballots to arrive after Election Day. And in a scathing dissent, Alito used her own words to argue against the decision. Fellow conservative justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas joined the dissent.

"To say that this is not the most likely explanation of States' thought processes would be 'a delicately put understatement,'" Alito wrote....

A spat between two Supreme Court justices is putting Trump’s plans in jeopardy, a legal expert noted.

Justice Samuel Alito looks poised to stay on as a counterweight to Justice Sonia Sotomayor after their "wacko interaction" spilled out into public view, Michael Popok said during a recent episode of the Unprecedented podcast.

Sotomayor read her "powerful dissent" to Alito's majority opinion on an asylum case, Popok noted....

'Maybe that's a sign!' Expert catches stunning irony behind dubious Supreme Court opinion

'Maybe that's a sign!' Expert catches stunning irony behind dubious Supreme Court opinion

A legal expert called out the irony in the majority opinion of a Supreme Court decision upending immigration protections for thousands.

Leah Litman, a veteran legal analyst, spoke about the Supreme Court decision in Mullin v. Doe during an appearance on MS NOW. The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in a decision that sided with the Trump administration and will take temporary protected status away from Haitians and Syrians.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion and shot down the defense's argument that the Trump administration was motivated by racial animus to take away TPS from Haitians and Syrians, a decision that will take away their immigration protections....

'Felonious': Right-wing justices rage as Supreme Court preserves abortion pill access

Conservative Supreme Court justices wrote a scathing dissent to the 7-2 decision to allow women to continue accessing the abortion pill Mifepristone via mail and telehealth.

"What is at stake is the perpetration of a scheme to undermine our decision in Dobbs v. Jackson," Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his dissent, referring to the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and pulled back abortion access.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court continued a pause on an appeals court decision that restricted access to Mifepristone via telehealth and mail. The decision extended a stay that the bench handed down earlier in the month, but it is not the final decision, as it will go back to the New Orleans-based appeals court and could return to the Supreme Court docket, reported The Hill. ...
