Nobel laureate flags 'astonishing' SCOTUS ruling MAGA wants 'to sweep under the rug'

A Nobel-winning economist sounded the alarm on a Supreme Court ruling that he fears isn't getting enough attention.

Paul Krugman wrote in a Wednesday Substack piece that after the Supreme Court wrapped up its term, more attention was going towards its defeat of Trump's attempt to end birthright citizenship than a more 'astonishing' decision in the case of Trump v. Slaughter.

"Various MAGA-adjacent parties, along with willfully blind centrists, are trying to sweep this ruling under the rug, hoping that the public doesn't understand its meaning," Krugman wrote. "The Court has now stripped regulatory agencies of their independence from Trump's whims and corrupt practices."...

Legal analysts burn Justice Neil Gorsuch's 'absurd' rationale in gun rights case

A couple of legal analysts ripped the bizarre rationale in the ruling of a MAGA star on the Supreme Court.

On the Legal AF podcast, host Michael Popok and legal analyst Lisa Graves shared how put off they were by Justice Neil Gorsuch's opinion in the United States v. Hemani ruling. The case involved a Texas gun owner who was found with marijuana and admitted to regularly using the drug.

The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that the federal government can't automatically disarm someone for using marijuana a few times a week, finding the prosecution at the center of the case violated the Second Amendment, according to reporting by SCOTUSblog....

Political expert names 'number one' mission for Dems if they win back the Senate

After Democrats win the midterms and take a majority in the Senate, their "number one" mission will be to keep MAGA in check long term, according to a political commentator.

Allison Gill, the progressive podcaster who runs Mueller, She Wrote, said during an interview that the "most important" task at hand for Democrats will be blocking Trump's nominees for the Supreme Court.

"One of the most important things is we have to block Supreme Court nominees in the next two years," Gill said, referring to the time left that Trump has in office for his second term....

'Felonious': Right-wing justices rage as Supreme Court preserves abortion pill access

Conservative Supreme Court justices wrote a scathing dissent to the 7-2 decision to allow women to continue accessing the abortion pill Mifepristone via mail and telehealth.

"What is at stake is the perpetration of a scheme to undermine our decision in Dobbs v. Jackson," Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his dissent, referring to the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and pulled back abortion access.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court continued a pause on an appeals court decision that restricted access to Mifepristone via telehealth and mail. The decision extended a stay that the bench handed down earlier in the month, but it is not the final decision, as it will go back to the New Orleans-based appeals court and could return to the Supreme Court docket, reported The Hill. ...

Supreme Court deals a blow to effort to restrict abortion pill access — for now

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed women to continue accessing the abortion pill Mifepristone through telehealth visits, blocking a lower court ruling that would have required in-person visits while litigation continues.

CNN reported that the conservative court maintained its stay of a May 1 Fifth Circuit decision that "abruptly required women to obtain the drug through in-person visits." Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented from the decision. The court did not explain its reasoning or disclose the full vote count.

The decision preserves the status quo while officials in Louisiana continue to push for limiting the availability of the drug in lower courts, CNN reported, adding that "the focus will now return to the New Orleans-based appeals court, which will decide the merits of Louisiana's challenge."...

Red state's election-rigging gambit hits a wall in federal court

Red state's election-rigging gambit hits a wall in federal court

Red state officials trying to redistrict their state congressional map suffered a setback in a lower court on Friday.

According to Alabama journalist Kyle Whitmire, a three-judge panel denied Alabama a stay, saying that it doesn't have the jurisdiction. Alabama officials have been trying to undo a federal injunction that came out of the case Allen v. Milligan, which restricts state lawmakers from redistricting until the next Census in 2030.

Alabama officials filed an emergency motion demanding a stay that ended up before the three-judge panel earlier in the week, asking it to lift its own injunction. A separate emergency order was filed to conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, who handles requests from the 11th Circuit asking the Supreme Court to lift an injunction....
