Full truth sought as Michigan State prepares to release Larry Nassar documents

DETROIT — Will the whole truth about what happened at Michigan State University that allowed Larry Nassar to sexually assault hundreds of young women ever be known? Likely not, special independent counsel William Forsyth suggested in 2018 after leading an investigation requested by MSU into what happened at the university that allowed the sports doctor to prey on women and girls for decades. After a review of half a million documents provided by MSU and interviewing 500 witnesses, Forsyth issued a report that complained about university stonewalling and portrayed MSU as indifferent to sexual a......

First emperor penguin in more than a decade hatched at SeaWorld

An Emperor Penguin chick hatched at SeaWorld San Diego last month has overcome long odds, becoming the first new arrival in more than a decade, the marine park announced Wednesday. While there have been 22 other Emperor Penguin chicks hatched at SeaWorld over the last several decades, this latest chick is the first since 2010. The San Diego marine park is the only facility in the Western Hemisphere where Emperor penguins can be found. The only others, outside of Antarctica, are located in China and Japan, said Justin Brackett, Curator of Birds at SeaWorld San Diego. SeaWorld waited for more th......

Possible state vs. federal legal war looms over Alex Murdaugh's assets of $1 million-plus

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hours after lawyers for Alex Murdaugh filed a request on Monday for an immediate federal seizure and an accounting of his assets under state control, the lawyers with custody of those assets replied with a request of their own. Shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, the office of John T. Lay, one of the two receivers who has had control over Murdaugh funds since November 2021, sent an email subpoena to Murdaugh lawyer Jim Griffin seeking various kinds of financial information, including: —Any engagement letters or contracts between Griffin and/or Paul Murdaugh and/or Alex Murdaugh. —Any......

NY attorney general's office won’t defend Gov. Hochul in migrant case in ‘extremely rare’ split

NEW YORK — New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office dropped its role Thursday defending the Hochul administration in litigation over the state’s responsibility to shelter migrants, a highly unusual step that appeared to suggest policy differences between two of the state’s most powerful Democrats. The Manhattan law firm Selendy Gay Elsberg has replaced James’ legal team in the case, according to a filing in Manhattan Supreme Court. The move came in a case centered on the city’s right-to-shelter mandate established in 1981, which mandates the city provide shelter to anyone who requests i......

She refused to pay a $500 fee to her landlord. Her property manager called the cops

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Carol Eckstrom dragged out a chair and staged a sit-in, just a few months after her stroke. In a way, she got what she asked for: The manager of her Sacramento mobile home park had finally hired contractors to fix the bulge in her walkway. But it would cost her $500. Eckstrom flatly disagreed that she should automatically have to pay $500 to her landlord to have the walkway fixed. She wanted time to find her own contractor. If sitting right on top of that trip hazard all day would stop the work from happening, that’s what she would do. Eckstrom is 73, a retired accountant......

New Jackie Kennedy biography details affair with memorial architect 6 months after JFK assassination

NEW YORK — A new biography of former first lady Jackie Kennedy details an affair she had with architect Jack Warnecke, months after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. In an excerpt of “Jackie: Public, Private, Secret” by J. Randy Taraborrelli, the story of Kennedy’s affair with Warnecke is fleshed out — starting soon after JFK’s murder in Dallas in November 1963. Warnecke, who Kennedy hired to design the dead president’s gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery with its famous eternal flame, asked her out to dinner in May 1964 and arrived at her door later that day with flowers despite not getti......
