GOP rep who promised voters he'd end stock trading now 'most prolific' investor

Rep. Rob Bresnahan (R-PA), who campaigned on banning stock trading among lawmakers, is now one of the House's "most prolific traders," according to Business Insider.

The report said that Bresnahan wrote an op-ed in a local paper in March 2021 "stating that if elected, he would co-sponsor legislation to ban stock trading in Congress."

Bresnahan argued at the time, "Some of the most prolific traders in the country serve in Congress. Whether or not they have done something wrong, the idea that we can buy and sell stocks while voting on legislation that will have a direct impact on these companies is wrong and needs to come to an end immediately."...

'Trade violence': Onlookers accuse Trump of 'manipulation' as he 'tanks markets'

Critics of President Donald Trump denounced Friday's announcement that he was "recommending" huge tariffs on the European Union as well as Apple, which — once again — caused the stock markets to take a dive.

Trump posted on social media that he was punishing the EU for being "very difficult to deal with" on trade by "recommending a straight 50% Tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025."

Trump also threatened Apple with a 25% tariff for not manufacturing iPhones in the United States....

'Huge damage': Irked investor doubts 'despised' Elon Musk can fix free-falling Tesla

A Tesla investor and wealth manager expressed skepticism over claims that Elon Musk's promise to spend less time in Washington will bolster his Tesla electric vehicle brand and encourage sales.

After Musk got involved with President Donald Trump and took charge of the Department of Government Efficiency, Tesla vehicles and Cybertrucks became targeted symbols for his slash-and-burn tactics. Tesla dealerships have faced vandalism and even been set ablaze, as Tesla's stock plunged. The company reported a whopping 71% nosedive in net income yesterday due to falling sales.

According to The New York Times, just hours after Tesla said first-quarter earnings were at $409 million, down from $1.4 billion last year, Musk said on an investor call that he planned to spend less time in Washington....

'Lots of blinking!' MSNBC's Sorkin dunks on 'strongman' Trump for taking '180-degree turn'

MSNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin mocked President Donald Trump for "blinking" under pressure and perpetuating the economic whiplash that continues to rile the markets.

Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski introduced Sorkin Wednesday, asking, "We have Trump blinking? Or, how would you describe it?"

"Oh! I think it's full blinking, lots of blinking!" Sorkin quipped while fluttering his eyelids. ...

'The most powerful check on Trump' isn't Congress or the courts: analysis

'The most powerful check on Trump' isn't Congress or the courts: analysis

In a perfect world, Congress and the courts would keep President Donald Trump's executive branch in line by balancing out his portion of the country's power base. Absent their effectiveness, the financial markets may be the last line of defense to moderate Trump's behavior, according to new analysis in The Bulwark.

Writer Matt Johnson posited that even as these vital institutions cave in to Trump's demands, "one important check remains: There’s nothing Trump can do to bend global financial markets to his will."

As an example, Johnson wrote that Trump's tariffs and the resulting stock market chaos were somewhat quelled last week when Trump was "bullied into submission" by the bond market. Trump announced that he was backing off his trade war because people were "getting yippee," but a massive sell-off in U.S. bonds led a CNN analyst to call it a rare economic "red flag" that even Trump couldn't ignore....

'Gasping for oxygen!' CNN's Bash taken aback by Trump adviser's depiction of the president

CNN's Dana Bash was taken aback after revealing a quote by a senior White House official that explained President Donald Trump's motivations for imposing a global trade war on the country.

Bash began by reading a Friday morning post from Trump , in which he claimed, "We are doing really well on our TARIFF POLICY. Very exciting for America, and the World!!! It is moving along quickly."

She introduced correspondent Jeff Zeleny to talk about "how Trump is feeling right now," as the markets continue to fluctuate, and an all-out trade war with China is causing consumer prices to skyrocket. ...
