'We rely on these events': Trump rally causes problems for historic small theater business

When the Trump show heads to Shankweiler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, it was set to coincide with a tribute to the 90th anniversary of America's second oldest drive-in movie theater.

But now the owners of the Shankweiler’s Drive-In said the small business was forced to switch the day after being informed that the 45th president and presumptive nominee would be stumping in town.

"We found out through the news," Shankweiler’s co-owner Matt McClanahan said in a video posted on their social media site. "Nobody told us this was happening."...

Lauren Boebert's 'improper behavior' causing her challenger to gain endorsements: report

Colorado GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert could be sweating recent news that her own "improper behavior," such as being kicked out of a musical after vaping and fondling, is causing her Republican challenger to gain more endorsements and bring in even more cash.

Boebert, who at first denied vaping in the theater but ultimately apologized after security footage revealed her conduct, is facing an intra-party challenge from Grand Junction attorney Jeff Hurd. Boebert has been bleeding support for months after being politically "wounded" by her own antics and scandals.

Now, Hurd is gaining even more steam, according to a local report....

Jimmy Buffett, in his own words: 'What I see at my shows might look like Sodom and Gomorrah'

SAN DIEGO — Jimmy Buffett, who died Friday at 76 following a four-year battle with Merkel skin cancer, knew exactly what accounted for his decades of success. "I'm not a great singer, and I'm not a great guitar player. But I'm a good entertainer," the Mississippi-born Buffett said in an in-depth interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2000. (All the quotes in this appreciation are from Union-Tribune interviews with Buffett conducted between 1991 and 2017.) Buffett's tropical-flavored songs, starting with his 1977 breakthrough hit, "Margaritaville," were direct, simple and free of even a ......

How (and why) Aaron Sorkin flipped the script for stage version of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’

Aaron Sorkin is well-known and well-lauded for his career as a screenwriter, from TV’s “The West Wing” to movie credits including “Moneyball,” “Molly’s Game” and “A Few Good Men,” to name just a few good projects. He’s an Oscar winner (Best Adapted Screenplay for “The Social Network”) and a five-time Emmy winner (four times for Best Series for “The West Wing” and once for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for that show.) He’s also Mr. “Walk-and-Talk,” with inventive, witty, fast-spoken dialogue as his characters, well, walk and talk. But at heart, Sorkin sees himself as a playwright. In 2......

Alan Arkin appreciation: Keep calm and carry on toward the edge of certain disaster

CHICAGO — Every actor’s career follows its own serpentine route to a final bow. But only Alan Arkin’s career boasted an actual scene, from the 1979 comedy “The In-Laws,” of a dentist instructed by the newest and least reliable member of his extended family (Peter Falk) to “Serpentine, Shel! Serpentine!” while getting shot at by would-be assassins. Somehow the zigzagging does the trick, because it’s a comedy. And because it’s Arkin. Among the world’s great comic minimalists, or mini-maximalists, let’s say, no one could beat him for capturing so much recognizable reality inside so much insanity,......

Federal judge blocks Florida law aimed at drag performers

ORLANDO, Fla. — A federal judge on Friday temporarily blocked a Florida law that he says is aimed at limiting the rights of drag performers. U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell of Orlando wrote in his order that “this statute is specifically designed to suppress the speech of drag queen performers.” “In the words of the bill’s sponsor in the House, State Representative Randy Fine: “ ... HB 1423 ... will protect our children by ending the gateway propaganda to this evil — ‘Drag Queen Story Time,'" Presnell’s ruling said. Fine, a Republican from Brevard County, declined to comment. The court ba......
