A Republican senator apologized for siccing security on a reporter, but it came too late to avoid being skewered online.

On Thursday, Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE) called for security and ran away after TMZ DC co-managing editor Charlie Cotton pressed him with questions about the absence of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

"Do you think Mitch McConnell needs to do more to prove his health?" Cotton asked. Ricketts answered, saying McConnell, who's been out of the public eye since mid-June, deserves "the time he needs." Cotton pressed him with a follow-up question, but Ricketts called out for the Capitol Police to "Stop him!"...

MAGA followers were coming unglued on Thursday after a Republican lawmaker got into a heated exchange with a TMZ reporter who pushed back on President Donald Trump's election claims.

TMZ's Charlie Cotton asked Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) if he was tired of hearing Trump talk about the 2020 election and his unfounded assertions that the election was rigged — just hours before the president was expected to give a primetime address about elections.

"Do you guys wish he'd give up the 2020 thing that he keeps harping on? Most Americans think it's crazy that he's saying the 2020 election was rigged still," Cotton said....

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) got all he could manage from tabloid-turned-Washington watchdog TMZ as one of its reporters pressed him for answers.

"I'm a little bit concerned that January 6 rioters, violent January 6 rioters who were convicted then pardoned, I'm a little bit worried that they're going to be entitled to taxpayer money," TMZ reporter Charlie Cotton said to Cruz, referring to Trump's $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization fund" that's expected to enrich his allies.

"Do you think they should be eligible for this sort of slush fund?" Cotton asked Cruz....

Social media influencer Dan Bilzerian shocked TMZ on Wednesday when he used a racial epithet in a conversation about his congressional opponent Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL).

Bilzerian has reportedly filed paperwork to challenge Fine in the Florida congressional race and made several comments during a live interview when he was challenged by TMZ executive producers Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere.

"You called your opponent 'this fat Jew,'" Levin said. "So he's not from Israel, but you called a guy in Florida 'this fat Jew.' How is that not antisemitic?"...

TMZ tracked down Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Tuesday traveling to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the latest politician traveling and enjoying spring break as the government shutdown hits its seventh week.

The outlet has been reporting on lawmakers who have fled Washington, D.C. while tens of thousands of federal workers have gone unpaid.

Cruz was the latest lawmaker spotted on vacation, and TMZ called him out for "hopscotching around the country" after his CPAC appearance — and his previous exits amid crises, including the time in 2021 when he left Texas during a deadly winter storm that led to power outages and water shortages in his state. ...
