Transgender people have a higher risk of having a long-term mental health condition than their cisgender counterparts, according to analysis described as being the first of its kind in England. Researchers from the University of Manchester said the study of 1.5 million people aged 16 and over, including almost 8,000 transgender people, is the first which can be said to be nationally representative. States across the country are taking new steps to stop transgender adults and minors from being legally recognized in public life. Proposed legislation would prevent trans people from being able to update driver’s licenses, hold public office, use public restrooms, or take shelter from domestic violence unless they do so according to their sex assigned at birth.

If passed, these laws would require trans people to be misgendered in order to participate in day-to-day life — which increases the risk that they face violence and harassment, or are simply excluded from basic services, advocates say. Such laws are likely to be challenged in court; a route that has repeatedly halted anti-trans laws from going into effect. ...

Former President Donald Trump vowed in a speech at a rally in Conroe, Texas on Saturday, January 28th, 2023 that he will prohibit transgender women from competing in female sports if he is reelected in 2024.

"We will ban men from participating in women's sports," Trump said, as quoted in a January 31st NBC News analysis.

Trump claimed that it is "so ridiculous" that "young girls and women are incensed that they are now being forced to compete against those who are biological males" and declared that "it's not good for women.
