Secretary of State Antony Blinken forced to change planes after Boeing malfunction

Secretary of State Antony Blinken was briefly left stranded in Switzerland on Wednesday after the Boeing plane intended to fly him back to the United States suffered a critical failure caused by an oxygen leak, according to multiple reports. Blinken had only just boarded the modified Boeing 737 jet in Zurich when the issue became apparent, CNN reported. The aircraft — a military version of the Boeing 737 Next Generation — was ultimately deemed unsafe, and passengers were forced to deplane. Another smaller plane was chartered for the secretary. Others traveling with Blinken, including members o......

Passengers sue Alaska Airlines, Boeing after 737 MAX 9 fuselage blowout

SEATTLE — Four Alaska Airlines passengers aboard the Boeing 737 MAX 9 plane when a piece of fuselage blew out earlier this month have sued both the manufacturer and the airline. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday morning in King County Superior Court in Seattle, is the first against Alaska Airlines since the Jan. 5 incident, according to Mark Lindquist, an attorney representing the passengers. Lindquist also represented the families of dozens of victims after two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 involving the Boeing 737 MAX 8. In this case, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 was operating a Boeing 737 MAX 9 on......

The I-95 bridge was not designed to withstand fire. Few bridges are.

The tanker truck full of gasoline lost control and burst into flames on a California highway exit ramp, blasting the bridge above it with intense heat. The bridge was supported by girders made of steel — the reliable workhorse material of modern infrastructure, used to support skyscrapers and bridges the world over. Yet it lasted all of 17 minutes. That fire, in Oakland, Calif. in April 2007, was eerily similar to what happened in Northeast Philadelphia on Sunday morning, when a tanker fire brought down an overpass on Interstate 95. Investigators have just begun to analyze what caused the 105-......

Mayor Adams’ controversial NYPD ‘stop-and-frisk’ teams make high percentage of unlawful stops, target mainly Black and Hispanic men, federal monitor says

NEW YORK — Mayor Adams’ NYPD Neighborhood Safety Teams tasked with keeping illegal guns off the streets carry out a high number of unlawful stops that largely target Black and Latino New Yorkers, according to a damning federal monitor’s report filed Monday in the landmark NYPD stop-and-frisk case. The court-appointed watchdog overseeing the NYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk tactics in years-old litigation, Mylan Denerstein, examined the constitutionality of stops, frisks and searches performed by covert “anti-crime” teams disbanded by Mayor Bill de Blasio and resurrected by Adams last year w......
