Federal Election Commission kills anonymous donor proposal

The Federal Election Commission on Thursday defeated a proposal — introduced by a Donald Trump-nominated commissioner — that would have allowed some political donors to remain anonymous.

All three of the six-member FEC’s Democratic commissioners were unwilling to adopt a temporary measure proposed by Commissioner Allen Dickerson, which Raw Story first reported earlier this month.

Dickerson wanted to give any political donor the right to request the speedy removal of identifying information — such as one’s name, address, employer and occupation. He also wanted his FEC colleagues to quickly approve a temporary process for donors to withhold disclosure while the commission gave full consideration to the issue....

Pro-Trump super PAC fined for election law violation

A Donald Trump-connected super PAC has been fined by the Federal Election Commission for failing to disclose $150,600 of in-kind donations in a 2022 public financial report, according to a review of federal records by Raw Story.

Make America Great Again, Again! agreed to pay a $6,075 fine and to distribute a policy to its staff on identifying in-kind contributions. The super PAC agreed to do both by May 24.

Representatives of the super PAC told the FEC that the error was discovered during an internal audit. ...

Fined: Marjorie Taylor Greene must pay up for election violation

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), one of former president Donald Trump’s most vociferous supporters in Congress, has agreed to pay a $12,000 fine for violating federal election law, according to Federal Election Commission records reviewed by Raw Story.

An investigation by the FEC found that Greene violated the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 when she improperly shared an ad produced by the Stop Socialism Now PAC on her campaign Facebook page and Twitter account in December 2020.

The FEC, which released documentation of Greene's fine today, found that Greene personally violated the law by soliciting funds for an entity that is not subject to the regulations imposed on federal candidates, who may not accept donations exceeding $5,000. The PAC supported Republican candidates in Georgia’s U.S. Senate runoff election in early 2021....

FEC votes to extend campaign salaries to recent caregivers, unemployed candidates

The Federal Election Commission on Thursday voted 5-1 to approve new rules allowing more candidates to pay themselves a salary while running for office, including recent caregivers and workers suffering from an unexpected job loss.

Under existing regulations, only candidates who earned an income during the 12 months immediately before running for office qualified to receive compensation from campaign funds, putting stay-at-home parents, recent college graduates and workers with gaps in employment at a disadvantage.

In 2021, Nabilah Islam Parkes — a former federal candidate and now Democratic state senator in Georgia — filed a petition urging the commission to revise its regulations on campaign salaries, arguing that the restrictions favored the wealthy and left many working-class candidates “out in the cold.”...
