Why Chicago’s 2024 Democratic convention didn’t devolve into 1968

Why Chicago’s 2024 Democratic convention didn’t devolve into 1968

CHICAGO — Despite some protesters’ vows to “make it great like ’68,” history did not repeat itself, and the streets of Chicago did not descend into chaos during this year’s Democratic National Convention.

And inside the United Center, delegates cheering the presidential nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris experienced none of the turmoil that upended the 1968 convention, when security forces roughed up journalists and attacked campaign volunteers.

‘Higher than Obama’: Repeat Dem convention-goers hyped over ‘electrifying’ Chicago energy

CHICAGO — Darnell Williams might be one of the most experienced convention goers at the Democratic National Convention this week, with seven under his belt.

The Massachusetts delegate, who works with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, first attended a Democratic convention in 1980 when he supported Sen. Ted Kennedy, the intra-party challenger to incumbent President Jimmy Carter, who would win the Democratic nomination but ultimately lose to Republican Ronald Regan.

Taylor Swift and Beyoncé singing at Democratic National Convention? Delegates are dreaming

CHICAGO — Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention might have looked a bit like a concert as delegates wore flashing, light-up bracelets in the United Center during its ceremonial roll call for presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

Later, former first lady Michelle Obama cemented her rockstar status with a rousing speech that had some delegates falling all over themselves.

And a real musical artist even showed up on the convention floor — rapper Lil Jon strutted among delegates changing the words of his hit song “Get Low” to support Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, doing so as the Georgia ceremonial roll call was announced....

‘Evil people’ and ‘haters’: Chicagoans endure disruptions to combat convention threats

CHICAGO — Tens of thousands of visitors will pass by a 138-year-old brick church facing a parking lot for the United Center, home of this week’s Democratic National Convention.

Welcoming visitors into the landmark building would be a “blessing” — and timely — given the history of Greater Union Baptist Church, which includes a visit from Black civil rights activist and suffragist, Mary Church Terrell, said Walter McCray, the Baptist church’s pastor.

Protests have hundreds of Democratic National Convention delegates stuck in buses

CHICAGO — The Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday afternoon to rows and rows of empty seats — at least in part caused by pro-Palestine protests that stranded some delegates attempting to travel from downtown Chicago to the United Center, several miles away.

Pro-Palestine protesters, some of whom attempted to break through security barriers ringing the United Center, clashed with law enforcement officers in the hour before the convention was scheduled to begin.

At least 20 buses filled with members of Democratic National Convention state delegations stopped about a half mile short of the United Center and idled....
