Turkey shorts power line, cutting electricity for 4,000 homes in Sacramento

What better way to say it’s Christmas Eve in Sacramento? Cloudy skies, cool temperatures and a hint of roasted turkey. A wild turkey made a fatal connection with a power line Sunday afternoon in south Sacramento, briefly cutting power to more than 4,000 customers of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. SMUD said 4,248 homes and businesses of the Little Pocket and Greenhaven neighborhoods, among others, lost power about 12:15 p.m. A spokesperson for the utility said a member of the gobbling, parading and, sometimes, ornery game species was to blame and that crews were quickly dispatched t......

NYC seeing summer surge in COVID-19

NEW YORK -- Have a runny rose? Cough? Headache? It might be a summer surge in COVID cases hitting New York City. City and state data shows the disease is on the rise, and experts say the uptick should be a warning to New Yorkers that the pandemic is not over yet. Driven possibly by indoor, air-conditioned gatherings and perhaps fading immunity to variants, the summer surge has pushed the number of COVID-related hospitalizations up from 4.41 hospitalizations per 100,000 residents to 10.22 per 100,000 in the middle of the month, the latest available data. Dr. Jessica Justman, an infectious disea......

200,000 gallons of sewage quietly leaked in the Florida Keys — some during a hurricane

In late September, as Hurricane Ian brushed the Florida Keys on its way to hitting the state’s southwestern Gulf coast, nearly 200,000 gallons of raw sewage from the island chain’s billion-dollar wastewater treatment system — not even 10 years old — leaked into the porous ground and nearshore waters. The “unauthorized discharges” weren’t disclosed to the public or the five-member board that oversees the wastewater utility. The leaks were revealed in two February “warning letters” issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The letters to the utility — the Florida Keys Aqueduc......

A heavy burden: Winter energy bills are going up, no matter how you heat your home

Winter heating bills will be higher this year for most homeowners, regardless of how you heat your home. Residential customers will spend about 28% more to heat with natural gas than last winter, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, though gas prices appear to have stabilized somewhat since dramatic increases at the end of last winter. Electric power will also cost more, although there are indications that they may be peaking, and customers could have choices with competitive suppliers in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, prices for propane and kerosene are also increasing. "You can't even f......

Almost 1 million residents in Michigan, including Flint, under boil water advisory after leak

More than 930,000 people in and around Detroit have been urged to boil their water after a leak was discovered in a 120-inch transmission main that transports water from Lake Huron Water Treatment Facility to residents. Great Lakes Water Authority issued the boil water advisory Saturday for more than 23 towns, including Flint, which has been battling water crises since 2014. As of Sunday morning, seven communities and 133,000 people remain under the advisory. The loss of pressure in a water system can lead to bacterial contamination, water officials said, and “precautionary measures” are advis......

Tijuana sewage spill shutters Imperial Beach and Coronado shorelines, yet again

SAN DIEGO — Adam Wraight pulled a blue sewage "warning" sign out of the sand near Imperial Beach Pier on Thursday morning, replacing it with the more ominous yellow and red placard telling beachgoers that waters were officially closed. "There's more than just the normal ooze that's coming?" asked Imperial Beach native Colette Dominguez who happened to walk by. "It's an active spill," explained Wraight, a marine safety sergeant with the city's lifeguards. "A big pipeline broke." Shorelines from the border up through Coronado were closed to swimming Thursday as the result of a pipeline that rupt......
