KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Michigan woman has come forward with allegations that International House of Prayer founder Mike Bickle sexually abused her starting when she was 14 and before he formed the Kansas City ministry. Her allegations, which some say are the most damning to surface yet about Bickle and come after four decades of silence, are the first claims that involve sexual abuse of a minor. She alleges the abuse began when she was a babysitter for Bickle’s two young children. Tammy Woods, who told her story exclusively to The Star this week, said the abuse occurred in the early 1980s in St.......

PHILADELPHIA — Ralphie fell in love with lobster at first bite. Steak too. But the pounds started creeping up. And up. In time, Ralphie’s doctor confirmed what his family already knew: At 30% overweight, the time had come for the South Philly Bullmastiff to go on a serious doggie diet. In the Keystone State, Ralphie is far from alone. Pennsylvania’s dogs are the most overweight in the country, according to a survey conducted by Veterinarians.org, a veterinarian-informed information group on pet issues. The study found that Pennsylvania dogs carry over 18 excess pounds on average. (A typical Ne......

SEATTLE — Dog owners should keep an eye on their pets' coughs, Washington's state veterinarian warns, as an unidentified respiratory canine illness spreads across the nation. No cases of the illness in Washington have been reported as of Tuesday, but it has been recorded in four states: Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Washington State Veterinarian Amber Itle recommended dog owners be vigilant, as experts suspect the illness is more widespread than just the states it's been confirmed in. The illness causes pneumonia and does not respond to antibiotics, according to a news rele......

MIAMI — Veterinarians in the Florida Keys did all they could to save a loggerhead sea turtle found last week with a spear through its head. But by Saturday, they made the difficult decision to euthanize the federally protected reptile. The Turtle Hospital on Marathon Key began caring for the turtle, which workers named Aubie (for Auburn University), last Thursday when a guest at a Long Key resort found him in distress. A steel spear was sticking out of his head and one of his front flippers was entangled in fishing line. While many sea creatures become entangled in monofilament fishing line, T......

An Emperor Penguin chick hatched at SeaWorld San Diego last month has overcome long odds, becoming the first new arrival in more than a decade, the marine park announced Wednesday. While there have been 22 other Emperor Penguin chicks hatched at SeaWorld over the last several decades, this latest chick is the first since 2010. The San Diego marine park is the only facility in the Western Hemisphere where Emperor penguins can be found. The only others, outside of Antarctica, are located in China and Japan, said Justin Brackett, Curator of Birds at SeaWorld San Diego. SeaWorld waited for more th......

NEW YORK — A tidal wave of stray cats has hit New York City this summer, paralyzing its shelter system as volunteers scramble for solutions and call for more city action. The stray cats live hard lives, often sick and at risk of infection with missing eyes or limbs. They can also carry parasites and diseases, putting other cats or even people at risk. They poop on doorsteps and kill local wildlife like birds. There are so many that the typically timid animals have become a public nuisance in some hard-hit neighborhoods. Dozens of new volunteers and cat organizations have sprung to meet the pro......
