'Get used to it': DHS snaps as art world outraged work used to push MAGA agenda

The Department of Homeland Security clapped back Tuesday at a Washington Post report about well-known artists unhappy that the Trump administration was appropriating their work to promote white "American heritage."

"Dear, @washingtonpost, add this one to your story. This administration is unapologetically proud of American history and American heritage. Get used to it," DHS posted to X, along with the painting "The Birth of Old Glory" by Edward Percy Morgan.

DHS posted three other paintings this month by contemporary artists Thomas Kinkaide and Morgan Weistling, and 19th-century painter John Gast. According to the report, the artwork depicted "idealized images of American life" that are "bookended by posts cheering the administration’s deportation campaign."...

'Fundamental rights': Jim Jordan comes out swinging against searches of citizens' data

Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) argued in a Washington Post opinion piece Wednesday, that it's every Americans' constitutional right to require the government to obtain a legal warrant based on probable cause before conducting a search on private records.

"That’s a key part of the Bill of Rights and an important protection against government abuse," Jordan wrote, adding that "short of imminent threats to national security, there is no good excuse for ignoring the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement."

Jordan's piece comes in advance of an upcoming congressional debate that he called "one of the most important debates we will have this Congress." Jordan maintained, "It is vital that we begin working now to protect Americans’ constitutional rights."...

'Error from hell' that led to mistaken deportation could come for Americans next: opinion

'Error from hell' that led to mistaken deportation could come for Americans next: opinion

An opinion piece in The Washington Post written by columnist Monica Hesse warned that the "administrative error from hell" that doomed Kilmar Abrego García to a notorious Salvadoran prison could easily condemn American citizens next.

Garcia, originally from El Salvador, was granted a form of asylum to remain in the U.S. to protect him from gang violence in his home country. He was living in Maryland with his wife, an American citizen, when federal agents accused him of being involved with the violent gang MS-13 and shipped him back to Central America. Garcia has denied any connection to MS-13.

At first, the White House admitted it had "made a mistake" when it deported Garcia, but domestic policy adviser Stephen Miller walked that back on Monday, saying, “This was the right person sent to the right place.” And, although the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the administration must "facilitate" Garcia's return to the U.S., neither President Donald Trump nor El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele claimed they had the power to do so....

'Unravelling': Trump accused of 'breathtaking sabotage' against the U.S. economy

'Unravelling': Trump accused of 'breathtaking sabotage' against the U.S. economy

President Donald Trump has been working at breakneck speed to eliminate federal programs, prompting an opinion columnist with The Washington Post to ponder, "Is there anything Trump won't destroy?"

Columnist Dana Milbank used the metaphor of Trump wielding an ax to chop down not only a 200-year-old magnolia tree at the White House, but the very Constitution on which the United States was founded.

Trump announced this week that he was getting rid of the tree planted by Andrew Jackson because, he wrote, it had become “a very dangerous safety hazard.” Milbank conceded that the explanation was "plausible," but what was Trump's justification for paving the storied Rose Garden into a “stone surface”?...

'Left-wing Tea Party': Dems warned not to let fury lead them to disaster

An opinion piece in The Washington Post urged Democrats to avoid making the same mistakes conservative Republicans did when they created the Tea Party in the 2000s to take on what they saw as spineless congressional leadership during the Obama administration.

Today, Democratic anger is at its own boiling point after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) voted with Republicans to pass the recent funding bill. Since then, both Republican and Democratic town halls across the country have been packed with constituents demanding answers about the actions of Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, among other issues.

In his WaPo opinion piece, columnist Ramesh Ponnuru wrote, "In 2009, Democrats controlled a unified government, and many conservatives were disgusted by what they viewed as their party’s spinelessness — much like progressives feel today."...

'The media reports are accurate': Trump stuck defending news sites in new criminal filing

'The media reports are accurate': Trump stuck defending news sites in new criminal filing

Donald Trump's legal team on Wednesday found itself in an unfamiliar position for the former president: defending traditional media sites.

Trump, who has railed against what he has dubbed the "fake news media," on Wednesday claimed in a filing in his criminal case in D.C. that news reports from the New York Times and other sites are "accurate."

The filing, made in support of a motion to dismiss the case for "vindictive and selective prosecution," argues that Jack Smith and his team of prosecutors failed to rebut the ex-president's argument that Joe Biden called for his criminal prosecution. To support its arguments, the legal team for Trump presented news reports....
