'Incredibly alarming': Expert says Trump's second-term plan threatens fresh water access

Former President Donald Trump's determination to eradicate abortion could threaten all Americans' access to fresh air and clean water, a legal expert said Tuesday.

Georgetown Law Professor Michelle Goodwin appeared on MSNBC to warn of the havoc Trump could wreak if he steamrolled various government agencies, removed career agency leaders, and replaced them with deputized loyalists, as he reportedly plans.

"It's incredibly alarming," Goodwin said. "They help us making sure we have clean air, fresh water, making sure that we can live a healthy sustainable life." ...

Michigan AG's office officially ends Flint prosecutions without any criminal convictions

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office is ending its pursuit of criminal prosecutions over the Flint water crisis after seven years of no convictions, a decision that came Tuesday after the state Supreme Court rejected an attempt to revive charges against former Republican Gov. Rick Snyder. Nessel's Flint prosecution team — led by Chief Deputy Attorney General Fadwa Hammoud and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy — said the Flint water cases are now "closed." Hammoud and Worthy said Tuesday they will release a "full and thorough report" on the office's prosecutorial eff......

Flint water legal tab keeps growing as Michigan AG's office mulls next move

DETROIT — The state of Michigan has spent at least $60 million so far in legal costs related to the Flint water crisis — including what was spent to litigate a historic settlement with the city of Flint as well as the prosecution and defense of more than a dozen state employees. The tally reflects the costs of civil litigation that resulted in a $600 million state settlement earlier this year and legal expenses for two rounds of prosecutions that have spanned two attorneys general and resulted, ultimately, in a few misdemeanor plea deals and no convictions. The total does not include about a y......

Gavin Newsom signs law to permanently ban watering grass at certain California businesses

An extremely wet winter may have freed California from its most recent years-long drought, but the state is still looking to clamp down on water use. Under a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday, public agencies, restaurants, corporate campuses industrial parks and certain other property owners will be prohibited from watering “nonfunctional turf” using potable water. The law does not apply to residential lawns, apartment complexes, sports fields or cemeteries. The new rules will be phased in beginning Jan. 1, 2027. If this prohibition sounds familiar that’s because it’s currently in ......

Dianne Feinstein championed the environment. On California water, her legacy is complicated

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It was 1990, and a self-identified city girl in a denim skirt and boots perched herself atop bales of hay near Los Banos in California’s farming heartland. Dianne Feinstein was running for governor and looking for votes. “I want to be a good governor for the agriculture industry of California,” she told the crowd, the Los Angeles Times reported. But the former San Francisco mayor lost the race to Pete Wilson, a more familiar face in the world of Central Valley agribusiness. Feinstein would win election to the Senate two years later and become a powerhouse, the longest serv......

Florida Democrats struggle so far to recruit challengers for key 2024 races

Florida Democratic leaders have talked a big game about going all out in 2024, winning back seats and being competitive with Gov. Ron DeSantis not on the ballot. But almost one year out, it’s not yet clear whether the party is recruiting enough viable candidates in both winnable and longshot districts, as well as raising enough money from donors. In the purple state House districts surrounding Orlando, which lean Democratic on paper but were all won by Republicans last year, there were still no filed Democratic candidates in districts held by freshmen GOP state Reps. Doug Bankson and Carolina ......
