MILWAUKEE — An open secret about national conventions: the real action is often outside the convention hall, blocks or even miles away from where a political party will formally nominate its presidential candidate.

And this week in tony restaurants, trendy bars, hotel ballrooms and entertainment venues across Milwaukee, corporate lobbyists, megadonors and conservative advocacy organizations will engage in the age-old tradition of using money to influence politics.

The Republicans vying to be governor of West Virginia are trying to outdo one another on how much they aim to restrict LGBTQ+ rights, with transgender individuals specifically in their bull’s-eye.

Ahead of the state’s May 14 primary elections, the two candidates leading the GOP field are Patrick Morrisey, the current attorney general, and Moore Capito, who resigned from the West Virginia House of Delegates at the end of last year to focus on his bid to be the state’s top executive. ...

Slated to appear alongside Greene is Derrick Evans, a former West Virginia state lawmaker who served a three-month prison sentence for impeding law enforcement at the Capitol on Jan. 6, and Ann Vandersteel, a far-right media personality who promoted the “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory and is a tribune of the far-right anti-government sovereign citizen movement.

Billed as an opportunity to honor World War II veterans, the event featuring Greene is scheduled to take place at a church in Vero Beach, Fla. The event is co-hosted by the Indian River County GOP, which has posted notice of the event on its Facebook page, and the Vero Beach chapter of Conservative Watch USA....
