'Pay attention': Experts agree 'Trump has no power' to enact his latest big plan

President Donald Trump claims he's ordering a new, mid-decade census, but legal experts say he has "no authority" to alter a process that's plainly spelled out in the U.S. Constitution.

The president is calling for another census in the middle of the decade as multiple Republican-led states redrawing their congressional districts to favor their party, and the FBI has agreed to help locate and bring back Democratic legislators who left Texas to deprive the GOP majority of a quorum needed to approve a redistricting plan.

Texas lawmaker moves to gerrymander another GOP seat for each week Dems are away

Texas state Rep. Brian Harrison (R) called on the legislature to gerrymander another district for Republicans for each week that Democrats prevent the adoption of a new congressional map by remaining out of state.

"Every morning I'm updating the statistics, okay, on what is actually going on in terms of punishment for the Democrats," Harrison told MAGA influencer Steve Bannon on Thursday. "If the Democrats are going to play hardball, I'm sick of it only being the Democrats, especially in Texas, where established Republicans usually do the Democrats' bidding and then blame the Democrats. Okay, let's let time for that crap is over."

'Strong statement': CNN anchor stunned by rental truck company's disavowal of Trump raid

A transportation services company rebuked the Trump administration after its rental trucks were used during an immigration raid in Los Angeles by Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and CNN's Pamela Brown was surprised by its vehement opposition to the move.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents hid in the back of Penske box trucks as they pulled up to a Los Angeles-area Home Depot store as part of "Operation Trojan Horse," advertising work to the day laborers there, and witnesses say they jumped out of the rear doors and started detaining anyone nearby.

'Get this chaos under control': Republicans fume as Trump and Johnson leave them hanging

Fearing their political careers could come to an abrupt end, Republican lawmakers in so-called "Blue states" are frantically both begging and warning Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson to call off the drive for gerrymandering that is taking place in Texas.

Concerned that Democratic governors will respond in kind, Politico is reporting that some GOP House members believe that Trump's endorsement of the plan is equivalent to signing their "political death warrants."

According to Politico's Jonathan Martin, "How could Trump not grasp that California Gov. Gavin Newsom would respond by swinging with Ohtani-like fervor at an opportunity to insert himself in the national debate, build a trans-continental fundraising list and demonstrate his mettle to Democratic primary voters?" by handing him the gerrymander cudgel.

Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA), who could lose his seat if Newsom makes good on his countermove, attempted to defend Trump by suggesting to Politico, "He [Trump] was not given the full picture of the ultimate consequences.”

According to the report, the same Blue state Republicans who won in 2024 that provided the majority margin that kept Johnson as House speaker, are the ones most likely to get booted.

"That includes House veterans such as Reps. Darrell Issa and Ken Calvert, both of California, but also younger, promising Republican lawmakers such as Kiley, 40, and Rep. Mike Lawler (N.Y.), 38," the report states with Lawler, a frequent cable TV guest, complaining, "This creates a situation where you’re going to lose blue state members, which over the long haul are critical to keeping the majority."

California's Kiley added, "I certainly hope sanity can prevail. The onus is on the speaker, along with the minority leader, to get this chaos under control,” before confessing he has spoken with the leadership by stating, "I’ve made my views very clear on the matter, privately and publicly."

Politico's Martin added, "California Republicans, I’m told by California GOP officials, are being promised only legal, political and financial support from the House GOP — effectively a promise to help in the redistricting arms race rather than trying to stymie it altogether."

Scott Bessent cornered on MSNBC after making admission about 'who pays' tariffs

Toward the end of an extensive interview with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, MSNBC's Eugene Robinson was afforded an opportunity to question the Donald Trump official and put him on the spot over the tariffs that went into effect at midnight.

After making a pitch to co-host Joe Scarborough that the tariffs should soon increase employment numbers, Robinson asked Bessent, "Mr. Secretary, there's one question I've got to ask you, because there has been some confusion. So we've got a tariff of, what, 50 percent on Brazil now, I think. And so if someone here, an importer wants to buy Brazilian products today or tomorrow and import them, they're going to pay 50 percent to the Treasury. And so who writes that check?"

"Well, it's a couple of things," the Trump Cabinet member replied. "First, we could have substitutions. So there's very little that only comes from Brazil, you know that it could it could come from Argentina. It could come from ––."

"Right," Robinson interrupted. "But assuming it does come from Brazil, say, or it comes from any country with a tariff, who writes the check to the treasury?"

"Well, the check is written to the person who receives it at the dock in the U.S.," Bessent tentatively answered.

"Ummhmm, the check is written by the person who receives it at the dock. So tariff is paid in this country by the importer, is that right?" the smiling Robinson persisted.

"But the Brazilian exporter could decide that they want to keep market share," Bessent protested. "They could lower their price so that the full 50 percent of the tariff, say, and ––."

"You're right, they can eat part of the cost," Robinson interjected.

"Which is what we've seen," Bessent offered.

"Okay, okay, but the check is written by the importer right at the dock?" Robinson asked once again.

"Yeah, and then, you know, the importer can pass it on or not," the Trump official blandly suggested.

'Dangerous': Ex-GOP official labels new Trump plan 'obvious attempt at usurping Democracy'

President Donald Trump is calling for a new census as Republican-led states consider mid-decade congressional redistricting, and a former GOP lieutenant governor called his moves an "obvious attempt" to undermine democracy.

The president posted Thursday morning on Truth Social that he had "instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures," adding that anyone who was "illegally" in the U.S. would "not be counted," and former Georgia lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan told "CNN News Central" that his plans were "dangerous."

MAGA world 'not going to stand for this': James Comer accused of Epstein 'miscalculation'

Plans by Rep. James Comer (R-KY) to use his position as the chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee to calm the waters around the Jeffrey Epstein files will fail before he even starts, former prosecutor Dave Aronberg explained on MSNBC on Thursday morning.

During the segment on "Morning Joe," Aronberg claimed there are too many hurdles for the Kentucky Republican to overcome that range from subpoenaed witnesses likely to refuse to give depositions to problems with the courts releasing testimony that could hamper convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell's appeal headed to the Supreme Court.

According to the former prosecutor, even if Comer can maneuver the minefield he has entered, it still won't satisfy the hard-right base that wants complete Epstein transparency.

Pointing to Comer's target list of people he wants to testify, the ex-prosecutor stated he doesn't believe anyone gave legal advice to Comer.

"I think this list was developed by political advisor," he told the hosts before joking, "It just looks like Comer threw darts at a list of Trump's enemies from both sides of the aisle."

"Like, why is Hillary Clinton on the list? What does she have to do with this?" he asked. "Bob Mueller, Bob Mueller! Who Trump hates, he was the FBI director at the time, but he had nothing to do with the [Epstein] non-prosecution agreement. You know who did? [Former US Attorney] Alex Acosta, but he's not on the list as you correctly noted. Of course, Trump's not on the list either."

"I don't think this list has any effect at all, because I wouldn't expect Bill Clinton or anyone else to testify anytime soon," he predicted. "They're going to fight it out in court or ignore the subpoenas altogether like [Ohio Rep] Jim Jordan ignored his subpoena from the January 6th committee and got away with it."

"A strategy of delay here, working things through the court would probably work, because the Democrats are expected to take over the House next November, and that would shut this whole thing down."

He later added, "I don't think it's going to work because this base has been promised things that the administration is refusing to deliver and even if the judges grant the motion to release the grand jury transcripts. They're only going to release the redacted version."

"In the government's motion, and I read it, it says that they promised to redact the identifying information of third parties who have not been charged," he observed. "So the MAGA world, who already feels betrayed is not going to stand for this. So either way, they're going to lose and these are people who feasted on conspiracy theories and Epstein has been the main course."

"So if they think that the grand jury records will tide them over, it will be the latest miscalculation in this unending controversy," he concluded.
