'Can't overstate how unusual it is': Legal expert puts Judge Cannon on notice in docs case

Evidence is mounting that Judge Aileen Cannon ought to be forced out of overseeing former President Donald Trump's classified documents case in Florida.

That's according to MSNBC legal analyst and former assistant U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C. Glenn Kirschner, who argued in a column for MSNBC on Wednesday night that with each new development in Trump's case, it's become "increasingly clear" that Cannon's impartiality can be questioned.

MAGA militia leader is on a hunger strike in solitary confinement: lawyers

One of the high-level January 6 defendants is on a hunger strike to protest the conditions of his detention, and has been threatened with force-feeding by correctional officers, according to a lengthy filing with a federal court in Washington, D.C. by defense attorneys.

The filing by lawyers for Edward "Jake" Lang, highlighted by CBS reporter Scott MacFarlane, details his experience at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn. Lang is charged with attacking police officers with a baseball bat during the storming of the U.S. Capitol, and has been awaiting trial in lockup for over 1,200 days.

Samuel Alito accidentally argues Fox's relationship with Trump is unconstitutional: expert

Among the decisions announced at the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday was the case against President Joe Biden's administration by states alleging the government was killing free speech when it coordinated with social media sites to stop disinformation about COVID.

The majority opinion determined that the states didn't have standing, but Justice Samuel Alito's dissent made an argument that national security analyst Marcy Wheeler pointed out hurts one of Donald Trump's 2020 election claims.

Appeals court sends 'pretty clear signal' Trump codefendants can put Georgia case 'on ice'

A former elections supervisor in Georgia who was charged as part of a broader investigation with trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia has had her case paused.

A Georgia appeals court Wednesday granted Misty Hampton's request that her case be suspended pending the outcome of an appeal that seeks to eject Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from prosecuting Trump and others. Hampton faces multiple charges, including violating the Georgia RICO Act, conspiracy to commit election fraud, and conspiracy to commit computer-related crimes.

MAGA Republican who failed to replace Lauren Boebert says GOP is 'irredeemable'

After losing his bid to fill the congressional seat in the Colorado district ditched by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) — Ron Hanks is tossing a lit match at the GOP tinderbox.

"I don’t take anything that happens personally. But what I do see is the Republican Party has basically made itself irredeemable,” the MAGA hardliner who served as a combat veteran for 32 years told The Independent.

Supreme Court being forced to rein in 'deranged' far-right appeals court that went too far

Ever since former President Donald Trump's three appointments, the Supreme Court has pursued a harsh right-wing agenda — but there are judges in lower courts who want to go so far that even this group of justices has to pull them back in a little bit, writes Marina Villanueve for Salon.

This comes as the justices are wrapping up a highly-charged term that has brought a number of hotly anticipated decisions — many of which have had to overrule the Fifth Circuit, a southern appellate court that is itself stacked with Trump appointees and has gained a reputation for issuing extreme right-wing rulings.

'Cringe': Internet scorches Trump as he brags to Black barbershop of having 'best' mugshot

Former President Donald Trump's possibly ill-advised decision to tout his jail mugshot among the reasons his support has "skyrocketed" among the Black and Hispanic communities was met with a deluge of derision and scorn Wednesday.

The MAGA leader famously became the first former president to have his mugshot taken upon being booked into the Fulton County Jail in Georgia, where he's charged with trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state.

‘Fight of crazy against crazy’: Wounded Rep. Bob Good confronts ‘forces of evil’

WASHINGTON — If Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) is on a mission from God, as he maintains, someone might want to tell God already.

Since Virginia voters cast their Republican primary ballots on June 18, the two-term incumbent who chairs the far-right Freedom Caucus has been trailing his opponent, state Sen. John McGuire, by upward of 300 votes out of just over 62,000 ballots cast.

Supreme Court notified by DOJ that there is no reason to stall Steve Bannon's lock-up

There's no reason why Steve Bannon shouldn't already be paying society's debt behind bars, the government says.

“This Court recently denied a similar application for release by another defendant who engaged in complete defiance of a subpoena issued by the same committee that subpoenaed applicant,” Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar wrote in a court filing first reported by NBC News Wednesday. “For reasons set forth in more detail below, the same result is warranted here.”

'Grade-A Coward': Columnist predicts Trump will flee debate stage — if he shows up at all

Former President Donald Trump will most probably flee the debate stage Thursday night — if he makes an appearance at all, a USA Today columnist argued Wednesday.

Trump is slated to face President Joe Biden in a closed-set CNN debate moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, which columnist Rex Huppke believes is likely scaring the pants off the former president.

GOP's Hail Mary bid to skirt Bannon's prison term hinges on 'striking position': reporter

Steve Bannon's emergency efforts to stay out of prison got a boost from Republican Party leaders including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who launched efforts to reject the previous congress’s handling of the Jan. 6 select committee.

Bannon, former adviser to Donald Trump, was convicted nearly two years ago of two counts of contempt of Congress. One count was for refusing to sit for a deposition with the Jan. 6 House Committee while the other was for refusing to hand over documents related to his involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

'Campaign of terrorism': Federal agents reportedly gearing up for wave of MAGA violence

Some argue former President Donald Trump has already incited political violence, as was the subject of his second impeachment for inciting the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol — and he appears to be ratcheting up to do it again, Mother Jones national affairs editor Mark Follman writes.

"Demagoguery in politics is as old as the republic, but no president has ever engaged in a campaign of incitement against Americans like Trump has," wrote Follman. "It has worked on individuals and mobs, the latter most infamously when Trump paved the way for the January 6 insurrection. After the 2020 election, I was among the first to report on this campaign of terrorism by the freshly defeated president, about three weeks and then just a few hours before the attack on the US Capitol. [then-House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi’s name was on the lips of the armed and violent Trump extremists there, too."

'I'm real tired of it': Experts put 'corrupt liar' Alito on notice amid Supreme Court leak

The U.S. Supreme Court inadvertently leaked a key decision dealing with the ongoing problems created by eliminating Roe v. Wade.

"The Court’s Publications Unit inadvertently and briefly uploaded a document to the Court’s website,” Patricia McCabe, the court’s public information officer, said in a statement. “The Court’s opinion in Moyle v. United States and Idaho v. United States will be issued in due course.”
