'It will be a slaughter': Michigan GOPer panics as state party is on 'brink of bankruptcy'
The Michigan GOP stands on “the brink of bankruptcy” with more than $500,000 in debt, according to a financial report obtained by multiple news outlets.
Warren Carpenter, a former Michigan GOP district committee chair and outspoken critic of chair Kristina Karamo, told CBS News Thursday the beleaguered swing state party has a “confirmed, hard factual debt” of roughly $620,000 with another $150,000 potentially owed.
Carpenter told CBS he fears the debt — which Karamo argues she inherited from her predecessor in 2022 — will mean for in 2024.
"She's disenfranchised Republican voters themselves and is providing no support to state candidates," Carpenter told CBS. “So it will be a slaughter.”
The report, compiled by a Carpenter-commissioned attorney who reviewed budget documents, found the party was on “the brink of bankruptcy,” according to CBS, The Detroit News, and the local news site MLive, which also received a copy of the yet-to-be-published report.

MLive reviewed budget documents included in the report, as well as some provided separately to the outlet, that found most of the party bank accounts were empty, according to their report.
Karamo in return lambasted Carpenter, whose motives she characterized as politically motivated, in a comment provided to CBS News.

"This individual is part of a network of corrupt individuals throughout Michigan," Karamo wrote, "in a co-conspirator relationship with Democrats and their media accomplices."
Carpenter is a GOP activist who hopes to oust Karamo as the party faces “imminent default” on its credit line, Bridge Michigan, a local nonprofit news outlet, reported last month.
The Detroit News reported the Michigan Republican Party had just $35,000 in its bank accounts in mid-August.
An anonymous source told MLive that the findings were dire.
“They don’t have a pot to p–- in,” the former chair reportedly told Mlive. “It’s awful.”
