Three Chicago teens — Eric Carson, 16, Silvonus Shannon, 19 and Eugene Riley, 18 — have been charged as adults in the beating death of a 16-year-old honor student.
“Family members believe Albert was beaten on his way home from school for refusing to join a gang,” reported USA Today. “But some witnesses say he was only a bystander swept into a violent fight.”

A sixteen year old student’s beating death in what authorities say was gang violence was caught on tape in excruciating detail.
Derrion Albert, 16, was killed after being struck in the head with a board by a fellow classmate in a fight between rival gangs after school.
“Seconds later the honor student hit the pavement,” Fox News Chicago, which obtained the tape, reports. “That’s when witnesses, who are other high school students, say gangbangers began stomping on and punching Albert.”
Four other students caught up in the melee have been released from the hospital.
Police say they can’t identify the faces of the boy’s killer from nearby businesses’ surveillance tapes and have released the tape in an effort to identify those responsible.
