WASHINGTON — The Super Bowl between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers drew an average of 111 million viewers in the United States, topping last year's record, The Nielsen Co. said Monday.

Nielsen said the broadcast on FOX of Super Bowl XLV, which was won 31-25 by the Packers, was viewed in 53.3 million US households.

Last year's game between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts attracted 106.5 million viewers in the United States.

"Super Bowl XLV caps what is arguably the most successful season that any sports league has ever had," Nielsen's Pat McDonough said.

"The Super Bowl continues to be in a category of its own, with an appeal that transcends sports and extends even to the commercials," McDonough said.

Last year's World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands drew 24.3 million viewers in the United States, making it the most-watched soccer game in US television history, according to Nielsen.
