While denying any personal wrongdoing, London's chief of police Paul Stephenson has resigned his post over connections to a figure in the News of the World phone hacking scandal, the AP is reporting.

The resignation stems from criticism of Stephenson for hiring former News of the World editor Neil Wallis as a part-time PR consultant for the police from September 2009 to 2010. Stephenson maintains that he himself did not hire Wallis, nor did he have any knowledge of phone hacking.

"I will not lose any sleep over my personal integrity," he said.
