A 26-year-old man was charged on Wednesday in connection with throwing a banana on the ice at a black National Hockey League player during a pre-season game last week, police said.

Chris Moorhouse of London, Ontario, was issued a summons byprovincial police on a charge of engaging in a banned activity under the province's trespassing act. Moorhouse faces a fine of up to $2,000.

During a game-ending shootout last Thursday in the exhibition match-up in London, Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyersskated toward Detroit goaltender Jordan Pearce when a banana was tossed at Simmonds, who is black.

"It was unfortunate that this incident happened but I am above this sort of stuff," Simmonds said. "This is something that is obviously out of my control."

Simmonds was accused by New York Rangers rival Sean Avery of yelling an anti-gay slur at him during a pre-season game on Monday.

Simmonds denied making such a remark and the NHL said there was not enough evidence to tell for sure.
