Philosopher A.C. Grayling: The 'Golden Rule' ignores diversity

British philosopher and public intellectual A.C. Grayling claimed at the Sydney Writers' Festival that the biblical Golden Rule -- one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself -- is not always a good standard for morality, because it ignores differences between people.

"But you have to remember, people's tastes differ, people's interest's differ, and if you make yourself the benchmark, the standard, of how everybody else should be treated then that's a very distorting view," he said.

Grayling is author of The Good Book: A Humanist Bible, a recently-published secular alternative to religious texts.
