Ron Paul: Assassination of Awlaki sets dangerous precedent

Texas congressman and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said on Friday that the death of al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki -- who was born in the U.S. -- was a "net positive" but it also set a dangerous precedent for future assassinations.

"This is very, very dangerous, you know," he said on Fox News. "Who knows what the future will bring. Maybe just dissenters would be potential terrorists. Already, it doesn't take a lot to be a potential terrorist."

Paul added he had voted to give the president the authority to go after Osama bin Laden, but not other terrorists like Awlaki.

"I strongly object to the president institutionalizing a policy that explicitly says that he has the authority to target American citizens because he believes they are bad people," he said.
