Former Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno passed away Sunday morning at the age of 85 after complications from lung-cancer treatment.
Paterno, who was the winningest coach in college football history, was fired by the school's Board of Trustees in November after the fallout surrounding the child sex-abuse scandal with former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
Paterno's family released a statement right after his passing.
"He died as he lived," the statement said. "He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been."
