The body of a man was recently discovered in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin home some four years after he killed himself, according to local media.

David Carter reportedly used a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun to shoot himself in the head some four years ago, shortly after quitting his job and telling neighbors that he was moving to New Mexico. That was in 2007.

His body was discovered on January 23, 2011 -- which would have been Carter's 45th birthday. A real estate worker from the local government had stopped by after the property was foreclosed upon and awarded to the county, according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

His body was practically a skeleton by the time it was found. Over the years, neighbors had taken to mowing his lawn, and the utilities had long since been disconnected. Most just assumed the property was abandoned, and over $30,000 in taxes piled up.

While it is unusual for someone's death to go unnoticed for so long, it is not unheard of. The body of a British woman was discovered in 2006 after she'd died three years earlier.

The same sorrowful fate befell an Australian woman, who died in 2003 but wasn't discovered until 2011. So too went the demise of a Los Angeles woman last year, who slumped over and died inside a cubicle at work but wasn't discovered until the next day.
