Anti-gay group attacks New Hampshire Republicans who 'betrayed marriage'

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has launched a newspaper advertising campaign aimed at ousting Republican legislators that voted this year against a ban on same sex marriage.

The bill would have repealed New Hampshire’s 2-year-old same sex marriage law and replaced it with a civil unions law. The Republican-led House voted 211 to 116 to kill the legislation in March.

"Dozens of House Republicans in New Hampshire betrayed the cause of marriage, betrayed the GOP party platform in support of traditional marriage, and stood in opposition to every major Republican candidate for president," said Brian Brown, NOM's president. "It's time for them to be held accountable for their vote."

The newspaper ad lists the names of the 87 Republican state representatives who voted against the same sex marriage ban, and accuses them of siding with "Democrats from New York."

"Worse, some of them mocked the very institution of marriage that God himself authored," the ad says.

NOM said it hoped to help create a "pro-marriage legislative majority" in New Hampshire this November by funding "pro-marriage" candidates.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney donated $10,000 to the controversial anti-gay organization in 2008, according to tax documents obtained by the Human Rights Campaign. NOM is dedicated to fighting same sex marriage and preventing same sex couples from adopting children.
