A charity board member of the New York's Roman Catholic archdiocese resigned from the church on Easter weekend due to Cardinal Timothy Dolan's lack of a desire to fight for gay rights issues.

According to the Associated Press, Joseph Amodeo said he quit the city's board Saturday after Dolan failed to respond to a "call for help" for homeless LGBT youths.

Amodeo was driven by his decision after Dolan had responded in disgust to a letter from the founder of a non-profit pro-LGBT group, who criticized Dolan for being anti-gay. Amodeo sent a letter to the Catholic Charities group admonishing Dolan.

"As someone who believes in the message of love enshrined in the teachings of Christ, I find it disheartening that a man of God would refuse to extend a pastoral arm to such youths," he wrote.

Amodeo later told the AP that Dolan "failed to respond to a call for pastoral assistance, to answer the question, "What can we do together as a church and as a people for youths who are homeless?"
