GOP’s Marjorie Taylor Greene says she opposes Black Lives Matter – but her investments say something different
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) invested in companies that back the Black Lives Matter movement she denounced as a "terrorist threat."
The Georgia Republican introduced legislation to award Congressional Gold Medals to police officers who served on duty during nationwide protests last year over police brutality, just weeks before scooping up $15,000 in stock from Walmart, whose president and CEO pledged support for the civil rights movement's goals, reported Insider.
That May 19 investment was disclosed last week in a required transaction filing reviewed by the website, which also found that she'd purchased the same amount in stock from NextEra Energy -- a power-generation company that has vowed to roll back its own harmful contributions to the climate crisis Greene denies.
Greene also purchased up to $30,000 in Nestle SA shares on May 18 or 19 and $15,000 in shares from Advanced Micro Devices, BHP Group, Seagate Technology Holdings, Southern Co. and Vulcan Materials.
The lawmaker told Insider that all her stock activity could be attributed to a financial adviser, but she did not say whether she provided any guidance to that individual about stocks to choose or avoid.
"I have an independent investment advisor that has full discretionary authority on my accounts," Greene told the website by email. "I do not direct any trades."
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) have said they plan to introduce bills banning stock trading by lawmakers.
'Blatant projection': Mitch McConnell blasted for calling voting rights a 'craven political calculation'
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday accused Democrats of "craven political calculation" because they are trying to pass S.1, a Senate bill that would fortify voting rights.
During a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell mischaracterized the intent of the legislation.
"It would let Democrats take a red pen to election law in each of the 50 states neutering popular components like voter ID while legalizing shady practices like ballot harvesting," McConnell said. "It's a recipe for undermining confidence in our elections, for remaking our entire system government to suit the preferences of one far end of the political spectrum."
"What a craven political calculation," he added. "What a way to show your disdain for the American people's choices."
McConnell quickly faced backlash on Twitter, where he was accused of "blatant projection."
"McConnell calling Democrats 'craven' is such blatant projection," Kelly Fauvre wrote.
"I probably shouldn't be listening to the Senate right now at work because hearing MITCH MCCONNELL refer to #HR1 as a 'craven political power grab' has me about to come out my fucking skin," another commenter added.

Potential GOP Senate candidate whines about 'Gossip Girl' being ruined by 'wokeness' -- and faces brutal mockery
"Hillbilly Elegy" author J.D. Vance, who is reportedly weighing a run for the United States Senate in his home state of Ohio, focused Tuesday on the latest crisis facing the United States: The remake of the teen drama "Gossip Girl."
Vance was angered when he learned that writer Josh Safran, who will be the showrunner for the new "Gossip Girl" that will stream on HBO Max, has reworked the wealth Manhattan socialite characters to make them more aware of the privileged lives they lead.
"These kids wrestle with their privilege in a way the original didn't," Safran said this week. "In light of [Black Lives Matter], in light of Occupy Wall Street, things have shifted."
Vance was not fond of this artistic decision, however, and railed that the teen drama was the latest work of art to fall victim to "wokeness."
"Wokeness will make everything boring and ugly," he wrote.
Vance's emotional attachment to a teen drama that originally aired on The CW network inspired a wave of ridicule from Twitter followers -- check out some reactions below.
