Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield took one small step into the record books on Friday, taking part in the first real-time musical duet from space from the observation deck onboard the International Space Station.

According to Space.com, Hadfield was joined from Earth by his friend and countryman Ed Roberson and members of his band, the Barenaked Ladies, as well as a youth group, the Wexford Gleeks.

"Welcome to the cupola," Hadfield said just before performing the track, "I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing)". "I'm ready to play a little music."

"Your scenery looks a little nicer than ours," Roberson replied.

Hadfield and Roberson, whose friendship goes back more than a decade, wrote the song together while Hadfield was in Russia training for his mission to the station. Since then, Hadfield has released a solo track, "Jewel In The Night," and is working on material for an eventual album, for which Roberson has already suggested a title.

"How about, 'Turns Out in Space Lots of People Can Hear You Scream?" he offered.
