Trump's 'disturbing' plot to use the DOJ to steal the election appears to have broken at least two federal laws: legal expert
On CNN Thursday, former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti analyzed former President Donald Trump's efforts to force the Justice Department to help him nullify the 2020 presidential election.
"You're a lawyer," said anchor Jim Sciutto. "Is this evidence of illegal activity by the former president?"
"It certainly looks like it," said Mariotti. "I will say it's one of the most outrageous and dastardly things I've ever seen in my life. It is something that I think people at home should be able to see on its face is something that's very problematic, which is — an effort by the president of the United States, and in this case a top DOJ official, really to spread what some people call the big lie. Essentially that letter says there are irregularities in the election, suggests that the legislature should call a special session to effectively overturn the results in Georgia, and doesn't cite any real law. It essentially says there is 'irregularity.' It's disturbing stuff."
"There are federal criminal laws that prohibit efforts to try to interfere with an election, an election of the president," said Mariotti. "There's also laws that prohibit coercing employees in the federal government to engage in political activity. It sure looks a lot like a partisan effort, very, very concerning stuff."

‘Demented clown’ Trump blasted for ‘rooting against America’ with unhinged statement attacking US women's soccer team
Echoing a MAGA chorus three days later, former president Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Women's National Team on Thursday, calling the players "leftist maniacs" and claiming they didn't win a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics because they are "woke."
After a disappointing loss to Canada in the semifinals on Monday, the U.S. team captured the bronze medal with a victory on Thursday. Longstanding right-wing attacks on the team began to resurface when members participated in a protest against racism at the start of the Olympics.
In his statement, shared by spokeswoman Liz Harrington on Twitter, Trump singled out an old nemesis, Megan Rapinoe, who incidentally scored two goals in the bronze medal victory over Australia — her final Olympic game.
"If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn't woke, they would have won the Gold medal instead of the Bronze," Trump said. "Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has. There were, however, a few patriots standing. Unfortunately, they need more help than that respecting our Country and National Anthem. They should replace the wokesters with Patriots and start winning again. The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about Radical Left politics and not doing her job!"

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) targeted Fox News this week in the premiere episode of his Firebrand YouTube program.
Earlier this year, Gaetz disappeared from Fox News broadcasts after he made an appearance to defend allegations that he was involved in child sex trafficking.
During the podcast, Gaetz insisted that the charges against him are "falling like a house of cards."
"I appreciate the platform Fox News gave me for years," Gaetz began. "It allowed me to get key information to the country. I have many friends still at Fox News and I enjoy our discussions, whether they're on-air or off-air."
Gaetz then tore into the network by targeting Fox New board member Paul Ryan, a former Republican Speaker of the House.
"Fox News isn't what it used to be," the congressman complained. "And it probably has something to do with their corporate board member Paul Ryan."
Gaetz recalled that Lou Dobbs had been removed as a host on Fox Business after he spread false conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election.
He then played clips of Dobbs attacking Ryan as a so-called RINO (Republican in name only).
"He's a fraud in every way," Dobbs said during one of the clips.
Gaetz continued: "Now that Ryan has concentrated power at Fox News, Lou Dobbs is no longer on air. He can't guide the populist right away from the invade everywhere, invite everyone version of Republicanism that sells out to K Street and abandons Main Street."
The show concluded with Gaetz conducting a 30-minute interview with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
