Maddow: A history of Republican's 'cry-baby hurting the country as part of a tantrum' narrative

On tonight's Rachel Maddow Show, the MSNBC host mocked Republicans who respond to policy disputes by complaining that their feelings are hurt.

She began by discussing the last government shutdown, in 1995, which was orchestrated by Newt Gingrinch, who apparently had had his feelings hurt when he'd been asked to deplane by the rear door of Air Force One, instead of being allowed to exit alongside President Clinton and former Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush.

After attacking current Republicans for behaving in a similar manner, Maddow addressed them directly, saying: "Doing something that you know will hurt your country because you feel personally disrespected -- because nobody has stroked your ego enough and complimented you enough ... you know, it's not a good look."

"It wasn't a good look in 1995," she said. "And it's not a good now."
