Texas lieutenant governor on abortion filibuster: We passed the bill thanks to security

At the 2013 Texas Tribune Festival, Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst said the key to legislative victory was keeping people out of the Capitol building.

Dewhurst presided over the Texas Senate in June as state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) filibustered anti-abortion legislation.

When questioned about how he handled the filibuster, he said he wouldn't have done anything different -- except have more security guards.

"When you had the International Socialist Movement and when you had MoveOn.org and when you had all these paid protesters there, the major thing that we should have done is have more security in the Capitol," he said.

"We did a week in a half later, and look at the scoreboard. The bill passed, the biggest omnibus pro-life bill in the country."
