Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe has been projected to become the next governor of Virginia, NBC News reported Tuesday night.

With 95 percent of precincts reporting, WUSA-TV reported that McAuliffe led state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) by just one percentage point, 47-46. Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis had amassed 7 percent of the vote.

McAuliffe's campaign was bolstered by stronger support among women voters. The Washington Post reported that McAuliffe led Cuccinelli by more than 10 percentage points in that demographic, part of an overall increase in Democratic voters around the state.

Cuccinelli, who adopted Tea Party Republican stances on issues like Reproductive health and sought to link himself to from of the GOP, was consistently trailing in polling running up to the election, which was too close to call for several hours.

The Huffington Post reported that Cuccinelli's running mate, E.W. Jackson, lost his campaign for lieutenant governor to state Sen. Ralph Northam (D).
