The widow of a corrupt Chicago area cop who staged his murder last year has been indicted by a grand jury for her role in his financial crimes.
Last fall Fox Lake police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz was found dead after radioing that he was in pursuit of three male subjects. His death set off a massive manhunt that led many to believe the so-called war on police was real. It turned out Gliniewicz died by suicide amid his own fears that his dirty deeds would be uncovered.
In fact, Gliniewicz had stolen thousands of dollars from a police department program set up to mentor youth. When a town official began investigating the disgraced officer’s theft, Gliniewicz even sought to have the official murdered by a gang member. Authorities said Gliniewicz spent the money on personal expenses such as vacations, adult websites, restaurants, and gym memberships.
Gliniewicz’s wife apparently got a share of the money as well. ABC 7 Chicago reported that “Melodie Gliniewicz was indicted on four counts of disbursing charitable funds without authority and for personal benefit and two counts of money laundering.”
Her bond was set at $50,000.
