According to a CNN report, American officials believe Russia may have hacked Qatar's state news network to plant a fake news story to further tension among Arab Gulf allies.

The report noted that the alleged Russian hack in Qatar would aim to cause "rifts among the US and its allies."

U.S. officials told CNN that "intelligence gathered by the US security agencies indicates that Russian hackers were behind the intrusion first reported by the Qatari government two weeks ago."

In the past day, reports of an alleged split between U.S. allies Saudi Arabia and Qatar over financial ties to extremists caused American President Donald Trump to tweet his support of the Saudis, creating more tension in an already-difficult political climate in the Arab Gulf.
