White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday argued that market volatility create by President Donald Trump's trade policies was only "short-term pain."

Fox News correspondent John Roberts pointed out during Wednesday's briefing that the markets had experienced "wild swings" following Trump's decision to place tariffs on China and other countries.

"Is the president worried that this saber rattling is causing many people in this country to lose money?" Roberts wondered.

"No," Sanders insisted. "The president is worried that countries have been taking advantage of us for decades and that he's not going to allow that to happen."

"We may have a little bit of short-term pain but we're certainly going to have long-term success," she added. "And we're focused on long-term economic growth principles and making sure we have a strong and stable economy."
