CNN's John Avlon, who for years served as a speechwriter for Rudy Giuliani during his tenure as mayor of New York, raked his former boss over the coals on Thursday for calling special counsel Robert Mueller's probe a "lynch mob."
During a Thursday morning segment, Avlon said Giuliani's attacks on the Mueller probe were deeply cynical and way over the line for a man who himself was a longtime prosecutor.
"Rudy calling his investigation a lynch mob is beneath him," he said. "It is pathetic, it is not consistent with his career as a prosecutor. He knows better, and it's disgraceful to invoke a lynch mob in this circumstance."
Avlon went on to say that, despite his efforts to play public opinion, Giuliani will not force Mueller and his team to end their probe by a given deadline.
"It may play to his base, but it really is beneath him and doesn't comport to the reality of this investigation," he said.
