A rally held by the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Washington state turned violent on Sunday, as Antifa and members of his rightwing group Patriot Prayer brawled in the streets.
The violence erupted in Portland, Oregon which is just south of candidate Joey Gibson's home in Vancouver, Washington. Gibson is the head of an extremist group called Patriot Prayer which often holds "free Speech Rallies" to bait left-wing counter protests. He is the leading candidate in his party's primary, and will likely face off with the Democratic incumbent in November. Because of his extreme beliefs and the violence that often follows him, he has previously been banned from at least one meeting site in the state.
Journalist Mike Bivins documented beatdowns, bloody faces and pepper spray. Bivins, who has covered numerous protests like this one by Patriot Prayer described the scene as "violent as all hell" and the most extreme to date.
