President Donald Trump's shutdown of the federal government could last into the new year, MSNBC reported on Monday.

MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi interviewed NBC News congressional correspondent Mike Viqueira for the latest from Capitol Hill.

Viqueira explained that the building was mostly empty, but that Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) had briefly gaveled the Senate into a pro-forma session.

"Sometimes you just have to hunker down like a jack*ass in a hail storm," Roberts warned.

Viquera said, "it looks like this is going to go on for a long time."

"Yes, it is Festivus. Yes, we've seen the airing of grievances from the president today in that barrage of tweets," he explained. "But we have not seen any feats of strength -- the president saying 'poor me,' he's home at the White House."
